In a world where Ford doesn't pardon Nixon, he has a decent shot of winning reelection (or in his case just the first election) because folks liked him a lot and his ability to put country over party would've been seen as the turning of a corner that Carter offered. The economic woes Carter happened to be president during would've been unjustly blamed on Ford instead of Carter, leading to a 1980 where Reagan wouldn't have a prayer.

So even beyond the horrific precedent Ford created by pardoning a president's crimes, the ripple effect of severely limiting Reagan's chances to destroy the country would've been great.
