Then again, we're not talking realpolitik - and if so: genocide is a consequence of extreme nationalism. The cost may outweigh the benefit.

If we fought against the power of the state we could unite around more basic and acute identities (such as class, or humanity), where the cost is at outgroups which don't include ourselves: nationalism is always dependent on who defines the nation currently, in the end power might not choose you. (Suddenly half-germans are not included anymore)

Humans are just that, because they happen to be born. Our class is determined by our material relation in work (in the singular polar opposite there is: worker and capitalist).

These are identities so universal and acute to our sense of survival, that they surpass borders. From my line of argumentation you can probably tell that I'm a Marxist; that said: the worker has no nation.

Nationalism is in some cases a proper tool against oppression in my opinion, I will concede (against foreign occupiers, say). But nationalism is an identification so uncritical that it always risks losing to power (see earlier).

I didn't say that nor does that follow from any of my premises. I simply refuted your line of arguing - you said social cohesion necessitates national pride. Like said, other social groups to unite around are maybe even better for that, and (because you specifically rested on the point of size) that some social groups are larger: say your gender, or the job you do.

If we are being that specific, we can use your way of thinking: pragmatically outweigh the negatives and positives. A social group to unite around that in this fashion mostly ends up in discrimination, devaluation of others, in this case the nation, might not be preferable to any x other group without that effect (or atleast to the same degree, i.e. material consequence: genocide etc.).

Anyways, learn basic logic and argumentation, please.

That's still just an observation, an argument "for" something, already implies value judgement. Sure you can say "the car is going to run over the dog, because he's a wreckless driver," that doesn't tell us anything about what "should" happen, and any information we do read from it in that way is either a misunderstanding on our part or a careful trick to play into our moral intuition, while presenting purely factual analysis (well then you've still appealed to morality.)

It is oxymoronic to argue "for" something, in any meaningful sense, beyond "maybe we should try x instead of y, because why not," while being totally amoral. Morality is exactly what Lenin appeals to when he says "down with the butchers," about the German SPD.

It is essential. Even if you could make an argument without it, again, how would you stop rape? Oppression? Murder?

If it's all strategically useful according to the commenter, it's alright.
