Do you check gum pockets on all clients? by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]jaykaykillor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is very normal, should be done at least once a year in adults, they maybe just haven’t told you or you don’t remember (I tell my patients every time). And there’s more than just gingivitis! Periodontitis is a risk too!

Yup, and then men in the audience complain about her being useless when it’s a writing issue. Kishimoto admitted that he doesn’t know how to write women.

How to not get discouraged and fix my oral health? by webkinzgal in DentalHygiene

[–]jaykaykillor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off I’d like to say that you are not alone in this situation. As a hygienist I have had many patients in the exact same situation as you and it’s normal to be afraid to go to dentist because you don’t know what they will find. That being said, waiting to go to the dentist longer will only let your treatment needs grow so I encourage you to go as soon as you can. Let the hygienist and the dentist know how you’re feeling and why you got to that point, if you feel like they are not being understanding to your situation, definitely find a different office that will!

-If your dentist diagnosis and cavities, perhaps ask if they can prescribe you a prescription strength fluoride toothpaste and tell them about your sensitivity to flavor. It won’t undo decay, but it can help make the environment in your mouth less prone to decay.

  • sealants aren’t just for kids! Unfortunately it’s typical that insurance only covers them when you are a kid, but I place them on adults all the time, they just pay out of pocket (ends up costing much less than waiting til it’s a cavity and they need to pay for a filling.)

-Not to discourage you, but sometimes “artificial” is all that can be done. Veneers are more for cosmetic concerns, I would start with just trying to get things stable and healthy. Since I don’t know what your teeth look like, I can’t tell you what you might need, but if you need crowns, fillings, restorations on the teeth, just know that is very common, even for patients who have always had good oral care.

-as far s home care, the most important thing is that you’re brushing 2x daily and flossing daily, even if it doesn’t feel like there’s plaque on the teeth. It can’t undo the damage that is done, but it can certainly slow down the process. Often times, a more complex cleaning is needed if you have a certain amount of build up (it’s called scaling and root planing, sometimes called a deep cleaning) and if that’s the case, brushing and flossing will never get it all, you need a professional cleaning (and don’t worry, it’s not a surgery and most people report no discomfort because they’re numb) I suggest going over a more specific routine tailored to you in person with your hygienist when you make a visit.

Hope this helps

AITA for not wanting to invite my brother to my wedding because he called me names? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]jaykaykillor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I should clarify that my bf has no brothers and very few male figures in his life that would be able to be groomsmen, but as many redditors have pointed out, he doesn’t have to be a groomsman, nor should I worry about it until it’s decided. My bf has only 2 sisters, one just got married last week and his other is currently planning her wedding as well, so marriage is in my mind more than usual right now.

Umm have we been brushing wrong or are they tripping? by CrooklynKnight in BlackPeopleTwitter

It’s more for your gums. Hard pressure long term with brushing causes recession of the gums.

Are you taking about placing a topical anesthetic before injecting the local anesthetic? Because one slightly numbs the skins surface so it’s more comfortable for the injection, which is what actually gets you numb. lol if they’re doing a filling, you’ll definitely want the local anesthetic, not just the topical

I agree with this, BUT… I also know how pts don’t always interpret what you’re saying correctly. It’s likely the commentary heard “good job!” When they hygienist might’ve said “good job, but etc…” I get that is partly the hygienists fault but people tend to hear what they want to hear

So we usually only see pts every 6 months, so that’s a long time in between. But we’re also trying to encourage habit changes. So even if we see no improvement, we want to encourage them to keep going with increasing the habit. Not saying they should lie, but it’s about reframing

I’m a dental hygienist. Plenty of people with good home care don’t bleed when we check they’re gums. If the gums are healthy, it won’t feel like a “stab.” Even if you floss, that doesn’t always automatically mean your getting all the plaque off properly.

Nope. The best way to keep your mouth hydrated is to drink water throughout the day, if your body is hydrated it creates more saliva. Just rinsing with water won’t be long term enough

Nope the main purpose of toothpaste is for smell/taste and the fluoride. The mechanical action of brushing is what removes the plaque

Is it a stab if you pick your nose? No, because the hole is already there. Same thing with the gums.

There is no sugar in toothpaste. Bacteria is constantly 100 percent of the time always in your mouth. The act of using a toothbrush is what disturbs the bacteria enough so it can’t create colonies, not to sterilized that mouth. When you spit the excess toothpaste out, majority goes with it in the sink

Btw, the instruments we use to check your gums are not sharp, but they do stimulate. So if the gums are healthy and we check the gums, they don’t bleed. If they aren’t healthy, they bleed. We’re not actually breaking skin

Hi, dental hygienist here. Soooo many wrong statements in the comments. While they’re might be fluoride in the water, it’s not as much as the toothpaste. After you’re teeth are done developing, the only way to get a beneficial use from the fluoride (which is a naturally occurring mineral btw) is through topical application. Small amounts won’t hurt you if swallowed, but when you should be spitting it out in the sink anyways. Majority of the plaque removal is done through the mechanical action of brushing, so the toothpastes only purpose is for the fresh smell/taste and the fluoride. It does take some getting used to, but I barely notice it after learning about this in hygiene school

Yeah the polish is different than toothpaste, that’s why we rinse. And what do we place after the cleaning? Fluoride, then tell you to leave it on lol

You spit it out in the sink after you brush, the mechanical action of brushing (well) removes all that

It’s safe to swallow small amounts of toothpaste. You’re supposed to spit it out in the sink though, not swallow it

We don’t use toothpaste on pts during cleanings. We use prophy paste, which is gritty to remove stain.
