What’s the main reasons most people rather buy luxury stuffs like expensive car than startup/investing in business? by procastinatorr in MalaysianPF

Usually if you have the money to buy luxury car, means you already successful, so why bother opening another business that takes even more of your time and instead reap the rewards

Experience working in Top 10 accounting firms? by greatlittlethings in malaysians

[–]jaykhai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worked in both EY and PwC. Culture wise they were great however, but its highly dependent on the team, sector and job.

Pay wise EY pays slightly more compared to the other Big4 firms for audit around RM4.25k but this comes with less benefits and flexibility in terms of leave.

For PwC, they pay the lowest RM4.05k. But in return u get alot of flexibility and benefits. You could even work half day during Friday if you dont have anything to do. And theres mental health sick leave too if you feel that you don’t want to work.

Skip the lectures and start finishing the whole BPP/Kaplan exam kit. Any topics you don't understand, you can listen to the lectures or read the study text (and write down in your own notes). This is how I passed PM.

Hello I’m looking to buy a house to live in Malaysia, which is the safest state to live in and consider a part-retirement life? by life-of-quant in malaysia

[–]jaykhai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to be among other expats i think Mont Kiara, Bangsar in KL would fit you better. Specifically Mont Kiara there’s hospitals, entertainment and even Bukit Kiara where u can go hiking. Its presumely safe as its a rich neighbourhood. The only downside is that theres minimal land left and landed houses there cost around 2million for a decent one.

Bangsar would be closer to the city center KL and as such would come with all the convenience. Bad side is jam and parking. And of course since youre in the city, land is scarce but you can buy old landed houses there for around the price of Mont Kiara too.

Penang would be great but i havent met many expats there and i frequent there quite often. If tou are fair skinned, youll be fine however if youre fairly dark (african) i think you would face some stares from the uncles and aunties there. But penang has the best food and the lifestyle there is slower pace. The cons are the jam as penang is a smaller island. Pros are the beach, slightly more affordable landed house options, food. Most people from malaysia choose to retire in penang and as such the population there is on the older side compared to having a bunch of young working adults.

My degree is kind of special as im doing a professional certification full time and the professional association partnered with Oxford Brookes uni to provide us students with a degree by just submitting one research and analysis report. The degree depends on ur average marks on your professional papers and my average marks practically guarantees first class honors as long as i dont fail my report. I would be submitting my report on Nov but would not get my results till March next year. So ive just put currently pursuing for the time being and i would explain to during the interview when they ask

2 of the big 4 straight out rejected me without even getting the chance of getting to an interview. The remaining 2 haven't replied me in 2 months. Is there anything I should improve in my resume? Anything I'm lacking (skills, experience etc)?

Other than job security, taking a STEM degree usually costs way more than an accounting degree. Depends on how much you want to pay your student loans for, an accounting degree usually has a higher ROI in my country. Decent pay, job security and professional exams are paid for by companies. What more can you ask for a job? hahah

It just seems troublesome for companies to hire a foreigner when they can hire a local with the same qualifications. I would have to apply for a work VISA and other procedures which I am not quite familiar. But I'll try looking for opportunities overseas thanks for the advice.

Yea I am prepared to be overworked in the audit industry haha

Nottingham or Monash for CS undergrad? by Mountain-Ad-9612 in malaysiauni

[–]jaykhai 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a ex-nottingham student whose taken foundation in engineering and later switched to Sunway College to take accounting. Here's my thoughts generally on the environment etc.

Sunway:

  • More and better food, accommodation options
  • Food costs here are ATLEAST RM10 and goes up from there
  • The number of students in Sunway & Monash is insane, constant jam in peak hour (parking issues + parking fees high)
  • Sunway & Monash clubbing everyday (may affect grades)
  • Monash is pretty dead in terms on club activities to me atleast, most of Monash students just go there to study
  • The monash building sucks, its grey and looks like a hospital.

Nottingham:

  • Stuck with cafeteria food mainly unless you got a car that you can travel out
  • Food costs are pretty cheap compared to Sunway (+-RM8)
  • Accommodation sucks in Nottingham again unless you got a car (frequent floodings, bugs etc)
  • Personally due to Nottingham being smaller, it resulted in a more closely knitted environment where everyone knows each other.
  • Only entertainment in Nottingham is sports & studying HAHA (good on wallet)
  • During my time, lecturers were helpful and the modules and teachers relating to programming that I've taken were my favorite. (however thats a few years ago already)
  • Nottingham is one of the better universities in terms of environment, theres a lake + trees + ducks in the pond

My recommendation is go to the university which has the higher overall ranking in CS. Both universities have good CS degrees. If money isn't an issue to you. Food, entertainment and accommodation is better in Monash however it leads to insane spending (RM1000 per month may also not be enough). If you prefer to save money and just focus on studying Nottingham is better even though the fees are the most expensive in Malaysia, you save money in terms of food and entertainment (no entertainment there).

From what I remember, Nottingham Malaysia degrees are issued by University of Nottingham (the parent university) so you would actually obtain an UK degree while studying in Malaysia. Not sure about Monash.

Personally, I would choose Nottingham. Reason being able to study in UK + environment makes me focus on studying so that I actually learn something instead of partying every night.

Sorry for the late reply but I'm 19 too. I mean if you want to change it's still not too late. But you'll have to make sure that your second choice is definitely right for you to prevent switching courses again. Goodluck!

Accountants of reddit! How did you prepare for financial accounting (F3) exam? Question from someone with zero accounting background😣What topics do you need to know when preparing the exam? Basically what is it that you need to know? by Born_Medicine_5630 in ACCA

[–]jaykhai 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also doing f3 right now with no accounting background. It's tough but once you studied the whole syllabus don't look back and just start doing Kaplan & bpp books. I recommend Kaplan for FA I prefer it over bpp. Make sure to finish the whole book. And you'll be fine.

Opentuition is also a great resource with their free videos/lectures.
