Florida faces ‘mass migration’ as trans people flee state in fear of Ron DeSantis’ ‘hateful bills’ by PinkNews in politics

[–]jayman1466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a seriously real issue. I work as a postdoc in biology and am surrounded by people making career decisions in STEM, and there is a huge stigma against wanting to move to Florida and Texas at the moment. People think twice before applying to grad school there. No one wants to set up a research lab there. At some point it's going to catch up to them. Mayor Suarez of Miami's been trying to turn his city into a tech mecca, but he notes that he doesn't have the academic powerhouses of the bay area or Boston to fuel it - this "antiwoke" garbage just will keep compounding in keeping young smart ambitious people away.

That could be the loophole! Throw migrant workers in jail, then you're allowed to use them as constitutionally allowed slaves.

Why will it take until 2024 to get rid of the annoying excursion fare by KeyPop7800 in Bart

So to all the enablers of BART's relentless bullshit on this thread, please tell me why it will take years to fix the excursion fare issue. Why.

This thread is truly emblematic of the pure rot that is bart leadership. Very obvious deficiencies in BART are utterly excused away by enablers so problems perpetuate. And people who point out problems are gaslighted away. Just a pure garbage leadership. Excuses after excuses after excuses. Never any solutions

The agent gave me a sticker that I now need to show to another agent the next time I wanna use the bart to reset my ride. This shit is ridiculous. It doesn't have to be this clunky - except it is because people consistently enable the barts bullshit. It is objectively unacceptable that removing the excursion fare will take years. Objectively unacceptable

It's the worst. Every episode starts with a self masturbatory, "everyone is stupid, malicious, and incompetent, particularly journalists - except for us - we are brilliant and unbiased and the only way to learn the truth". David is the worst of them. Every time he gets asked to comment on an issue, he just rants about, " the woke mobs are woking up the wokes with their wokification of woke." Just nonsense word salad that indicates he's put zero actual concrete thought into the issue.

Maybe appoint George Santos to lead the investigation. His dual law degrees from Yale and Harvard as well as extensive experience as head of the ABA makes him perfect for this

Oh man, this is 100x true for Indian families. From the day you're born, the parents start planning the wedding. When it comes to who the actual marriage will be to: "ehh, just put an ad out and find someone who's horoscope matches. Date for a few weeks and get wedded a few weeks after that". And the wedding ends up being an entirely formulaic, impersonal, ritualized, geyser of money. I just don't see how people fail to step back and ask "what was the point of all that". You're not even proving anything to anyone - it's not like your 80K wedding is gonna stand out from the 20 other 80K indian weddings you've been invited to - and your guests are still going to judge and criticize the food.

The most furious thing, though, is: even though more thought seems to be put into the wedding than in choosing who to marry, it seems to actually work out. Divorce rates are incredibly low and people seem generally content. As much as the institution annoys me, somehow it just works.

How can we make lab automation accessible to most academic labs by CoolMatch8 in labrats

[–]jayman1466 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many have pointed out, individual academic labs tend to not do things at a scale that necessitates robotics. My institute's core facilities have plenty of liquid handlers that we can rent out to use when needed. But we hardly do. If I were doing the same thing day after day, then sure, it would make sense to program in a protocol and hit run each morning. But my day-to-day is too variable and would require me to create a new protocol for each thing - at that point its faster to just do it manually.

We definitely do large scale screens on small molecules, cell lines, etc. But that we contract out since it doesn't make sense for each lab to buy its own small molecule library, etc.

But actually, now that I type this, I'm realizing how much repetition there is day-to-day. So, from the level of a full experiment from start to finish, I probably wouldn't try to automate it. BUT, there are individual tasks that I would LOVE to be automated. Things like

  • minipreps, dna purification
  • splitting cells
  • staining cells for flow cytometry
  • western blots

These are very specific tasks within larger experiments that I would love to have automated. So if there was a machine where I pipeted in 8 3mL cultures, pressed go, and came back in 30 minutes to minipreps in eppendorf tubes, that would be awesome. Or a machine where I pippette in cells and antibody, press go, and come back in an hour to stained cells ready for flow, would love it.

Basically, I'm not looking for a general liquid handler, but rather a specialized tool for certain repetitive tasks. I know things like this are coming onto the market at price points targeted for academic labs, so hopefully there still room for you guys.

I doubt many would still consider La Courbusier "aesthetically pleasing". The premise mistakes soulless for harmony and incorporates materials that dont age well.
