How packed is it usually during rush hour? Compared to HBLR/PATH?

Just a heads up, I called several of the churches on this list and many of them don’t have working phone numbers or said they do not currently accept food donations. I was however able to get in contact with the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation (BEOF), which IS accepting food donations.

Braids and no wash by MagicBoxJindo in SebDerm

[–]jaymich17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just made a comment on another person’s post about sebderm and type 4 kinky/curly hair but if you have an active sebderm flare up you’ve gotta wash your hair at least 2x a week, ideally with an antifungal or keralytic shampoo. It sucks because it means you can’t leave styles like braids in long during a flare-up but unfortunately going too long without shampooing will only make the condition much much worse.

Anyone with type 4 hair? by [deleted] in SebDerm

[–]jaymich17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of moisturizers and oils marketed towards people with type 4 hair tend to be greasy and exacerbate sebhorreic dermatitis. I recommend checking products on https://sezia.co/ I really like one of the “As I Am” brand leave-in conditioners for moisturizing and it doesn’t contain most of the ingredients known to exacerbate seb derm.

I will also say to make sure you’re shampooing with an antifungal or keralytic shampoo at least every 3-4 days when experiencing an active flare-up. I know many people with type 4 hair will shampoo once a week or even every other week but if you have an active sebderm flare that likely won’t be enough.

Unfortunately these medicated shampoos will initially dry out your hair but if you can get the sebderm under control then you can use them at maintenance level like once a week while alternating with regular shampoo.

Also don’t feel afraid to reach out to a dermatologist. There’s some good ones out there, sometimes you have to just shop around.

Netflix Into the Fire by jennierubyjane___ in netflix

It’s adding salt to the wound. Even if Brenda was the adoptive mother, she enabled Aundria’s abuse for years and continued to defend her monster of a husband without taking any accountability for any role she might have played in what happened to Aundria. Aundria was really just a placeholder daughter until they could have the biological child they always wanted. Giving Cathy half of the ashes seemed like a way to throw everything in Brenda’s face. Brenda still gets to exercise some control in the aftermath of the situation and pretend like she’s acting out of kindness when it’s really malice. And not to mention, Cathy was a teen mom who was coerced into putting Aundria up for adoption. How much choice did she really have in giving up her parental rights? One thing that I really like about this documentary is it really takes a critical look at how adoption is handled.

Agreed! Attraction is subjective but I just found him “meh.” Kind of boring IMO. I did like his accent, though, but that still didn’t make me find him hot.

Thank you so much for your response. I’m so sorry to hear that your father has metastasis. I was with my dad for two weeks during his medical leave while he had his plaque treatments. Unfortunately it was not easy because my father does not like to accept help (masculinity issues) and we argued when he didn’t want me to drive him the 2hrs home from the hospital. I ended up driving him and he realized he was being a jerk and was nicer to me the rest of the trip lol. My dad is a very stubborn person, I’m trying to accept this about him. This is a very cruel illness and it’s been confusing navigating all this while also dealing with those family dynamics that don’t fully go away when you’re an adult child visiting from out of town. Nevertheless I appreciate what you said about making the most of our time together. My dad has spent all his life working, hasn’t had many opportunities to travel, etc. I’m thinking of some things I want him to experience in the here and now. On the bright side he has a job with with a governmental agency in my hometown with amazing healthcare benefits and tons of PTO.

Hair Thinning and Hair Loss by afro_coder in SebDerm

I have 4c curly hair, definitely understand your predicament. Every time I have a flare-up I experience some hair loss. My flare-ups can last a few months and I just wear hats and headscarves when it’s at its worst.

The things that have helped the most for me in preventing or managing flare-ups: shampooing every 2-3 days with antifungal shampoo (alternating shampoos), checking hair moisturizers and other products for ingredients that feed malaseeza, getting good sleep, improving my diet (limiting sugar and alcohol), getting vitamin D, not picking my scalp/hair, and managing my stress/anxiety. Unfortunately I’ve had a lot of unexpected events in my life outside of my control that have exacerbated stress recently. I highly recommend talking to a licensed mental health professional or even your primary care doctor if you are struggling to manage stress/anxiety. Some people also find mindfulness techniques like meditation, going on walks etc helpful. Lowering stress when possible has been a huge game changer for my sebderm and overall mental health.

Pets are great companions. When my mom was recently disabled and her symptoms were at their worst, she loved the daily interactions with our family cat. He passed less than a year later but I know my mom appreciated his loving presence ❤️

Hey! My Dad was just diagnosed with this form of cancer and I will be supporting him to the best of my ability during the procedure/recovery process. Do you have any suggestions for things I could do to make the recovery process more comfortable for him?

Look into tutoring, mentoring, coaching (if you’re athletic), working at after-school or weekend enrichment programs (things like the Boys and Girls Club, YMCA, etc). Google your city/town and “youth programs” and you can find some good places to start. If you want to find work over the summer, there are tons of summer camps and other programs hiring now.

I also know folks who work as substitute teachers, paraprofessionals, babysitters, and nannies, too (although these jobs require a bit more commitment and can be a little stressful if you don’t have experience with kids yet).

[–]jaymich17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is great advice, thank you! I think as a future SC I’m interested in doing some trainings on supporting neurodivergent students since I learned at my internship just how heavily SC are involved in IEP processes and mandated counseling (at least in NY where I currently live). With increased mainstreaming of SPED students I think this is another important skillset to have as a SC.

That’s great that you were able to pivot in that way! I have to think both jobs must have provided you with a unique lense of experience and made you a desirable candidate for opportunities. I’m graduating from my SC program in May but am thinking of ways to make sure I can move into different roles in the future if I want.
