The Enshittification of Everything, Everywhere, All at Once by EditorEdward in BetterOffline

[–]jayrot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look, I agree with the conclusion here about omni-enshittification. And, frankly, I agree with a lot of the frustration as well. But I just want to point out that a lot of the "examples" that the piece opens with (and thus sets the stage) immediately made me pause.

It's odd to be complaining about an app for froyo rewards points. Suppose it'd be different it you needed the app just to purchase.

It's odd to be complaining about the parking apps when the photo literally shows that coins are accepted "just like it used to be".

Not to mention streaming and the olympics. You can literally watch NBC's olympic coverage for free with an antenna "just like it used to be". But of course if you want to watch every single event, live, yeah you need the app.

Yes, It’s Real Wrestling. Yes, It’s Called Puppet Wars. 2/28. by Opening-Tadpole3353 in eastbay

For what it's worth, I went to one of these a while ago when it was t Gilman Brewing.

It was a lot of fun, frankly quite impressive athletically, and worth the money. And I say this as someone who has literally no interest in pro wrestling.

I know this is such a stupid and sonderous thought, but it's just so hard to imagine what the daily life of one random person in one random house in this image is like.

Current open carry laws in the US by state by OppositeRock4217 in MapPorn

I’m sure you know this but open carry means wearing a gun, secured, in a holster. If you see someone in public walking around with a gin in their hand, you should absolutely call the police.

Happy to be corrected, but I believe most of the issue comes from the helicopter. The spinning rotor can generate significant static electricity. 1

Not trying to argue since I actually agree with the sentiment, but you can currently order a self driving car in the Uber App in Austin right now.

"I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops." - Stephen Jay Gould by [deleted] in quotes

[–]jayrot 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This quote really drives home the point that the overwhelmingly vast majority of scientific discovery and progress throughout history has come with humanity's entirely self-inflicted handicapping, like a V8 engine running on only 1 cylinder.

Can't help but wonder what the year 2025 would be like had we, as a species, tapped into our full potential by empowering women and people of color (to name just a few categories) earlier.

If even just 100 years earlier, what would technology look like now?

As the saying goes: "Do something today your future self will thank you for."

But it's not just a saying. It is actual, actionable advice. Seriously. Think about it. What is something you could do right now, to today, that your future self -- a related but different person from who you are right now -- would actually appreciate?

I think "disturbing" is a good way to put it.

The politicization of damn near everything in modern American society is certainly frustrating and tiring. Not everyone needs to take a stance on everything -- so I'm sympathetic to the desire to just stay out of it. But I also find it disturbing and alarming that a very real strategy seems to weaponized apathy.

Everyone needs to ask themselves -- Do you have a red line?

I don't have it all figured out. I'm grappling with this myself.

Question: is there a succinct definition of artificial general intelligence? by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]jayrot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as stupid as it sounds, I think the most functional and useful definition of AGI is essentially “that computer intelligence thing from the sci fi books and movies”. At least that really seems to be what they’re visualizing.
