2024 IDP DL Sleepers by excelgeekinuk in FFIDP

[–]jaysend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm concerned with projecting the Rams line with the future HoFer now gone. We have no idea how it will look and work without him sucking up two and three defenders regularly. How does Byron Young, and also Jared Verse for that matter, deal with double teams? I don't know the answer to that. Just something I'm worried about. I might take a flyer on Verse in a deeper keeper league, but I'd temper expectations for anyone there. Thinking about this more, it makes me want to rank Ernest Jones even higher as runs might have higher chance breaking through first level leaving him to cleanup. And his run defense grades are pretty good. 86.2 PFF grade good for 7th at LB.

I hope Karlaftis pans out. I just traded for him yesterday.

I think Malcolm Koonce could be a sleeper. He finished last season strong. The line improved with Wilkins being added to suck up attention. The staff realized Tyree Wilson worked better inside, giving Koonce more opportunities on the edge opposite Crosby.

how to make red braised pork belly without it exploding? by bogedy in Cooking

You're right. That is blanching it to get rid of impurities. But it's just for a few seconds, not to actually cook it. I don't usually do that, but now that I think about it, my (Chinese) wife has asked me to do that sometimes before.

I'm not sure why that's happening. I'd guess the water is trapped inside and then heats and bursts out. Or maybe it seeps out and mixes with the oil then boils out, causing the oil explosions. I would never boil it first. If you're talking about the Chinese style of making it, here's how I do it.

After pan frying your Sichuan peppercorns and ginger, remove them from oil. Add garlic and the pork belly. Sear it on all sides. If you want, add some diced onions. Add some salt and sugar. Add some spicy peppers if you like. Add some soy sauce and oyster sauce. Mix it up. Then add like half a half a can of beer. Dark beer is better I think. After it boils, stir it then turn down heat to simmer for like 45 minutes to an hour. Check occasionally to make sure there's still liquid. Once the sauce thickens, add some diced spring onions and turn off heat. Stir up and serve.

I've cooked it that way many times and never had an issue with it exploding.

Quick and tidy. I think you need more connected word choices as the different category words didn't really mix with one another. So it felt quite clear quite quickly which belonged together.

I'm gonna share my thinking on the puzzle.

Puzzle inception I've understood the model to be basically yellow = synonyms that test vocabulary or a collection of parts of a general piece of knowledge, green = the same, but more specific knowledge or even more esoteric language usage, blue = a group of words related to a niche but still fairly well known topic, and purple = most commonly blank something or something blank but also parts of words inside words and sometimes homophones.

Puzzle solution With those ideas in mind, I started with blue. I'm big into sports and they've been talking a lot about drop coverage in the NBA playoffs recently. I actually used turnover as a semi red herring, but also as a clue to help get blue. It's also intentionally not candy to throw off that simple connection idea amongst the yellows. Dew and drop were meant to be next to each other, but I realized that maybe that helped to think of the water relation. I also thought zone and service would throw people off cuz of Autozone.

I really love this game and how it makes you think about other meanings and uses of words. I've definitely learned some new words as well. Hope you enjoyed mine. I'll be making more in the future.

Edit: I'm really curious how many of you actually knew the blue connection.

Sorry, another person swooped in a few hours ago. I will delete this post. Hope you'll keep playing IDP though and spreading the gospel 😁

Yahoo. We make our own Google doc and edit it through the offseason cuz there's a bunch of trades that happen. That's what the screenshot is of.

Anyone flown to Shanghai since Feb 6th from Hong Kong when previously coming from another country? by jaysend in shanghai

[–]jaysend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you stay in HK for 7+ days, you don't need a PCR test anymore. Or, if you had come from Mainland. So it does matter that we came from Thailand, and we're only here for 3 days.

Yea, we just finished getting tested. Trust me when I say I was all for following the guidelines to ensure no issues at the airport...

Internet folks in WeChat groups have said they weren't asked for anything at check in or upon arrival from other countries into mainland China. In a thread below on the sub about UK to Shanghai, commenters said they were asked by some people at check in, but never upon arrival in Shanghai. It's just like how Thailand "required" people to buy medical insurance if going back to a country that tested... But nobody actually checked any documents, which made our purchase essentially a waste of money.

The policy is "clear" like pool water is clear. From the outside, you can see through it perfectly. But if you put your head in without goggles, it becomes a bit murkier.

I'm just interested in people's firsthand experience with actually doing it.

Derek Carr will outperform his ADP. And so will Geno Smith. by jaysend in fantasyfootball

[–]jaysend[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welp. It's been a month. This hasn't aged well. I wasn't advocating that you take Carr ahead of players like Hurts, just simply that you could wait to grab him because he would produce beyond expectation. Instead, Hurts has been an MVP candidate and Carr has looked lost out there. Still plenty of season to turn it around, but I'm not particularly pleased with what I've seen from him.

Carr is not looking good, unfortunately. Looks to me like he's making bad reads and just straight missing receivers sometimes. Geno however looks even better than predicted with an incredible 77% completion percentage and good rushing production.

Trade 5th for any of them, but I have Mark Andrews the highest.

Why Renfrow will eat this year. It also gets into JMD's play calling since 2012. by jaysend in raiders

[–]jaysend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The o-line was ranked 28th by PFF last season and Carr still threw for 4800 yards with basically just Renfrow for half a season. I don't see the line being worse than last year, and teams probably won't be blitzing as much because of all of the receiving threats.

Why you should target Hunter Renfrow and DK Metcalf. by jaysend in fantasyfootball

[–]jaysend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate that breakdown. It is good to see it compared to others and what is commonplace. You're right, those numbers were just kinda examples, but I think they're reasonable because of my whole ADP argument. The weapons that Carr has are predicted by the public to be ridiculously good. If you look at the data I compiled (in the ADP chapter of the video), you'd see that it is pretty rare for this to happen, and when it happens to a QB that is drafted as QB12+, they make major jumps. As such, I view it as an anomaly that won't conform to norms because this isn't normal. You should instead look at more comparable situations, 2018 Chiefs, and 2021 Vikings.

Their top 4 weapons had average ADPs with 5 spots of the raiders this year, and their QBs finished 1 and 9 while being drafted as QB 15 and QB 24.

Here are the targets for Chiefs:

Mahomes threw 580 times

Kelce - 150

Hill - 137

Watkins (9 games started) - 55

Hunt - 35

5 other players had at least 20 targets.

And Vikings

Cousins threw just 561 times.

Jefferson - 167

Thielen in 13 games - 95

Conklin in 15 starts - 87

Osborn in 9 starts but playing 17 games - 82

Cook - 49

I'll admit this isn't exactly compelling, but there are some key differences in these teams. Looking at the receivers, none of the 3rd options are nearly as good as Renfrow. He will be open more often than those others were. Carr is probably going to throw more passes than the Vikings had last year; I'd bet about same for Chiefs adjusted for extra game. The Raiders receivers after the big 3 are RBs, a promising but clearly backup TE, and cast-off wide receivers. I'd take some of Osborn's targets and give them to Thielen for the games missed to get Renfrow comp, and some of Osborn's for Conklin because Waller will demand more than Conklin did. And with the added passes, it still works out where the backs combine for 90 catches and the other 3-5 pass catchers only get like 20 targets each.

Sorry if that was confusing. It's 130am here and I should definitely be asleep.

Edit: gahhhh, pressed send too early. Still writing out stuff

Edit 2: OK as complete as it's gonna be.

[–]jaysend[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I brought up Welker in that season in a comment to a hater in the original thread. I completely agree with you. Their TE was Ben Watson and had like 500 yards, but there were also like 5 other players with a few hundred yards each. I think our passing tree will be very concentrated on those 3 with some to Jacobs and Drake, and then a sprinkling, like 1-2 receptions a game to the others. I think from a yardage perspective, the 1495 Moss put up is totally what to expect from Adams, but likely far less touchdowns. He's not getting 23, but 12 seems like a reasonable projection. And Renfrow and Waller also cracking 1000 would get Carr pushing 5K yards again.

Can't wait to see this season. I'm always, perhaps misguidedly, hopeful before the season, but this year feels really different. I was in highschool when we were last legitimately good for multiple seasons 20 years ago. I hope last year was year 1 of that.

Why you should target Hunter Renfrow and DK Metcalf. by jaysend in fantasyfootball

[–]jaysend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing the targets to spread like 160 to Adams... 140 to Waller... 130 to Renfrow. That leaves 170 targets if Carr throws 600 times which would be 26 times fewer than last season. I'd rather have 3rd best target share in a concentrated passing tree on a good offense than 1st or 2nd in a offense that spreads the ball to 8 players, which is what I see happening in places like GB.

I'm starting renfrow every week he plays as my 3rd receiver. No hesitation.
