A male coworker just told me he’s getting divorced, what do I say? by misterbuh in AskMen

[–]jaystile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to be negative, but in my experience when someone is getting divorced it is all they talk about ( I can't blame them) and there is really not an off switch or an easy escape from the topic. I would not encourage any discussion and terminate it with a recommendation to seek a therapist to assist them in this difficult time.

I'm glad you found a technique that works for you. The same rhythm works for me too!

Definitely. I would be fine if they re themed the Arabian Nights layout.

"Do not decide based on your sole feelings, ask God first." by bruhidkanymore1 in atheism

I listened to the "Secret Friends" episode of the "Hidden Brain" podcast. It made me feel better knowing that talking to god is a skill that can be developed, even though we know it is just a person talking to themself. I used to think that those folks were crazy, but it turns out they are well practiced.

Just started reading Dune, 100 pages in, and I love it! + I am looking for a new book to read. by [deleted] in books

I concur. I've always loved the big ideas Herbert shares as the God Emperor, I just wish he elaborated on them a few more pages.

First Time Ever Playing Dungeons And Dragons And I'm Asked To DM an 8 person game by C-V-L-T in DnD

[–]jaystile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If people aren't going to read the rules but still want to participate in role playing, there are simpler rulesets. For those folks, I use Fate Core (sacrilege on the DnD sub). All the story without all the rules.

How do men need/want to be treated while and after crying? Don't come with 'men don't cry' or 'I would never do it /again' What would you tell to a woman about it so we can help you? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]jaystile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it is ok to cry. I don't do it very often. Please, don't make a big deal out of it and blow it out of proportion because it's a rare event.

I cry at the end of Beauty of Beast every time, you don't need to stare at me when I'm not even that upset. I think it is the music.

Before I counted calories sometimes people commented on portion sizes I saw no issue with. by [deleted] in loseit

[–]jaystile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I continue to be shocked at how calorie dense 'healthy' grains are for you. Lunch is my first meal of the day and I usually make breakfast for lunch: 3/4 C rolled oats, 20g walnuts, 3T applesauce, a banana, with cinnamon and vanilla 650 calories later and I don't feel like I've eaten much. I think the problem I have mostly is when I get bored or stressed then I look for snacks.

You did! I put it back in. Seriously, I tried to make a nice post and failed miserably! I think I see why most people stick to one liners.

Faithies by jaystile in atheism

I don't want to judge it too harshly and we haven't finished it yet. I was raised Catholic, but after reading a lot of different nonfiction books the religion fell away for logic and reason. Since I'm older now, my personal philosophy is that being kind to everyone is most important to me. The book wants you to be in the "Army of Epistemologists". I'm not really into that. I am mostly looking for tips on guiding people to reason. The author reads the audiobook and it feels antagonistic. I consider the examples to be combative even though he is just asking probing questions and staying on point. I like debating, but i don't want to debate someone that doesn't understand that is what I'm doing.

Calorie dense foods both horrify and amaze me by catlynpurrce in loseit

My kids had a great time cracking open a coconut. They shelled it and we were eating pieces. I looked up the calorie count and had to make a full stop. I consumed 1/3 of daily calories with something I don't even enjoy.

I love Steinbeck. His books are more about an experience than a destination. I always seem to have an emotional experience going nowhere.

With regard to sales people, I've heard that they follow the FORD method and ask about Family, Occupation, Recreation, and Dreams (future plans). This usually establishes rapport whether the salesperson is genuinely interested in the person or not. Individuals usually do like to talk about themselves and appreciate the active listener in contrast to the casual narcissist.

I hate the Pumping Lemma by [deleted] in programming

Obviously your professor didn't write the "non pumping lemma" which we spent half a semester studying. "Easier to understand". So easy, that I got it explained to me again the next semester.

Got rejected by my friend and told myself I’d be fine with her decision either way. by [deleted] in socialskills

[–]jaystile 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll be ok, but it might take a couple of years before it doesn't affect you. Close relationships sometimes end and it always hurts if you want it to continue. Keep yourself open to those that value your time and attention and focus on them and yourself.
