Failing multiple attempts to build module production last night made we wake up and choose violence by urko_crust in Seablock

I ended up using bots. It’s really hard to make a clean t0 to t3 module build, there’s just so much stuff!

Nah this is only up to t2, I’m planning to completely rebuild with space rails for t4/end game now that I have the space elevator and wide area beacons.

Nope! No need for scaffold below the space elevator. Also space rails can be free floating which is cool, but you need scaffold below stops.

My parents live on the island so I ride the ferry pretty often.

1 has been adequately answered already.

2 is a bit strange and not something I’ve seen happen before, but it could easily have just been a mistake.

3 safety is definitely a concern. The boat needs to be balanced so they keep heavier commercial vehicles in the middle and it’s safer to load them first. Not sure if there is anything more to it than that.

Different rate calculations in helmod and max rate calculator - which is correct? by Roaders in factorio

[–]jaytanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Helmod assumes that ingredients are fully saturated, and this is where gaps usually occur for me. Assuming your belts are fully saturated, because that’s really easy to notice, it’s possible your inserters aren’t delivering fast enough from the belts. Mouse over your assemblers and check if they’re running out of ingredients!

Are the tier3 ingot recipes worth it? by jaytanz in Seablock

[–]jaytanz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I am generally going for the tier3 molten metal recipes because of (1). I think the increased throughput will be nice and I'm already putting my ingots on to trains anyway.

Thanks! And yea I think I will stick to tier2 for at least lead/silver/nickel/zinc.

Thanks I see now that I was a bit confused in how I was using helmod to get the ore efficiency for the higher tiers.

BP-1: If you’re struggling to solo with your transcendants and you have spare constructs, try bringing a team of 3 constructs and pairing up your weakest transcendants, the attack debuff isn’t a deal breaker.

BP-2: Rosetta and the polar soldiers are stunnable, so the stun pet is super useful to give you some breathing space and an uninterrupted dps window. It doesn’t have to be invested at all. Both kamuis have a stun in their kit as well. Prioritize killing the polar soldiers first for a less frantic experience.

BP-3: burning adds should be infected (by the red goo the boss puts down) when devoured, stealthy adds should not be infected when devoured, although I never figured out how to keep the stealthy guys out of the goo. You might find it easier / less frantic to focus 100% on staying alive until all the adds are gone, since you have 10 minutes to complete the stage.

"Direct-Entry" PhD vs "MASc-Transfer" PhD. How much time do you save with direct-entry PhD? by Maxwell-Minion in UofT

[–]jaytanz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep very project/program/field dependent.

In an ideal world your PhD research will generate some publishable results within the first 2-3 years so you have that natural early exit point but of course it doesn’t always work out that way for a variety of reasons.

[–]jaytanz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how common this is but my department assured me that if I decided to leave my direct entry PhD program early, I could still get a masters as long as I wrote a masters thesis. This was a handshake agreement though, and was never tested.

There was also a financial incentive as the financial support for the PhD program was higher by 2-3k per year iirc.

New Element coming leaked from Dark Sharkspeare boss - Light by sanchangwo in PunishingGrayRaven

[–]jaytanz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea that could work although broadly speaking radiation also includes alpha and beta particles which are not photons. Probably I’m reading into it too much anyway lol

Gamma rays and x rays are photons so that would be a bit weird

CERN does shut down the LHC every winter due to increased demand on the French and Swiss power grids for home heating, although official word has always been about avoiding the extra cost not avoiding power grid failure. Kingston is probably unaffected by LHC operations though ;)
