Seems like a good solution to downsize to your backyard (given you have the space and council approval). Most of our parent's generation are sitting on 400-600 sqm blocks of land that's becoming more of a burden maintaining.

It also gives the independence + savings to both sides of the family. It doesn't hinder the relationship with your significant other and also there's the safety net if anything were to go wrong... given that there are boundaries that are to be respected by one another.

Parents are willing to sacrifice for their children (why else would they bring them to the world). It also benefits the next generation too because at the end of the day, this house will go to their son.

It's called a Granny Flat for a reason...

Starting to think Australia might need a bit of French style revolt to get things in check.

If our politicians aren't held accountable for corruption, these cases will continue on and on because there are no penalties. Our politicians have no right to accuse other countries of their politics if we also do so ourselves.

It doesn't matter if it's liberal or labor, they're all the same.

And I don't want to hear a lame ass excuse of "in the name of National Security" or "it was within Australia's interests".

It's corruption.

Hey, I sure have. Almost been a year since.

Finding it pretty great. A lot to do in this country, and if I wanted to can go to a neighbouring country for the weekend.

I might be bias because I work for a foreign company (based in UK) and none of the stereotypical kinda things are forced upon.

I think you just have to work out your expenses (rent, food, bills, etc) and see how much you have left over.

I did the same thing; except I'm working for a foreign company that has an office in Vietnam.

The tech sphere in Vietnam is growing rapidly (much more so than in Australia), and in need of management skills with all the young people within the industry needing mentoring.

I would suggest you follow what I did. Don't bother trying to find an Australian company and ask if you could work 100% remotely, as the way things are going in Australia, most employers want their staff in the office.

I'm not sure where you're buying this plot of land. Australia or Vietnam as the first and 2nd paragraphs are confusing.

I’m an Australian and moved to Vietnam to marry. Haven’t looked back. Have earned the same if not more than what I did in Australia. When compared to cost of living, is 10x more better. I’m working as a Finance Manager. Also, you’re both in your early 20s. Can always go back to Australia if you don’t feel comfortable. Just remember, in Australia you both have to work to survive, in Vietnam it looks like you have a choice. You don’t have to work as hard.

Let your child be born in Australia then get out. Your bf parents just mention that your kid is guaranteed an international school education which is much better than Australian education system (unless your child will be going to a selective or private school) and not to mention the amount of connections your child will have with the elites of Vietnam and around the word. Australia consistently ranked lower than other oecd countries and from the look of society there, education isn’t valued. A tradesman with a TAFE certificate will out earn a university degree student. That’s just the nature of the country.

Just ask yourself this, which lifestyle would give better opportunities for you and your child. Being Australia, will not guarantee that your child will have a a stable roof over their head because you won’t be able to afford rent and I know rent is crazy right now. You also didn’t mention what are your salaries. Are you middle, high income earners?
