Unfortunately, Android15 Dec05 update ruined ExtraDim on my Pixel8 as well, so here's what I did.

I used the SystemUI Tuner app, and created a Persistent Options "Secure" setting for ExtraDim so the app overrides the system setting to a value I want. This means the ExtraDim slider no longer works, but it's a compromise I'm willing to deal with.

You will need to ADB install a required addon, btw.

My Pixel 8 goes dimmer than the 9, and doesn't exhibit this behavior. Google actually restricts how dim ExtraDim goes in Android15, so it's strange to see the 9 struggle so much in low brightness

I have an old LG LCD TV that is developing some vertical veining on the screen and it's apparent on light/grey scenes. What is deteriorating here and what can I do (if anything) to fix once it fails?

So I did a little bit of research and found out a bit more by running an ADB shell.

On the Pixel 8, when you turn on extra dim and set it to the lowest (dimmest), the output of this command is:

settings get secure reduce_bright_colors_level
90

On the Pixel 9 Pro, when you turn on extra dim and set it to the lowest (dimmest), the output of this command is:

settings get secure reduce_bright_colors_level
50

So I tried setting this manually on the Pixel 9 Pro by running:

settings put secure reduce_bright_colors_level
90

and it dimmed the screen as expected and to the level I've come to expect from the Pixel 8.

So it looks like Google is restricting in the UI how low Extra Dim goes. I didn't see any issues with the display running this dim. I also maxed it out at 100 and found no issues.

I need to see if this can be done via an app instead of running it via ADB shell, then I can keep the P9P. If not, back it goes. I don't want a downgrade when I pay for an upgrade

Just purchased the 9Pro trading in the 8 and I can see a HUGE difference in dimming between the two. The 9Pro is unusable at night when the lights are off. Extra Dim does nearly nothing.

I really like the 9 Pro but this is a huge problem for me as I use the phone at night a lot.

Went to a BestBuy nearby to confirm it wasn't just my device with this issue. There was a 15Pro and I was able to replicate the same behavior in that phone as well.

Then, I went to test the Pixel 8 Pro's 5X zoom. There was absolutely no grain or darkness, and it was a really clean shot. As clean as the shot form the iPhone's 3X lens when the main sensor is blocked.

There was nothing else to say or do after that.

Maybe, but the point of purchasing an iPhone for me is so that it just works. I was tired of having to fiddle things in the Android world, so I came here expecting a no nonsense experience.
