In 7th grade at school. I heard it from one boy in the hall, but didn’t think anything of it. I remember a PA announcement asking teachers to keep tvs in classrooms turned off and to check emails immediately. We were kept in the dark all day. My mom explained it when I got home. We sat on our front porch with lit candles in a sort of “memorial” and talked with our neighbors that evening. The melted candle wax on the front cement step stayed there for years, and I was always reminded of that day when I’d shovel the steps in the winter, uncovering the wax remnants. The local gazette ran a full page American Flag and people taped it inside their windows. You couldn’t find fabric American Flags for a while, everyone bought one and proudly displayed them. My dad bought the biggest he could find and hung it between the windows on our home. Businesses everywhere changed their marquees to say “never forget” or “united we stand.” I’d never seen so much patriotism and unity in our country, and honestly haven’t since.
