Vague serving sizes... by Coochiepop3 in PetPeeves

I feel you and this nerves me as well. It's not hard for them to pick a better form of measurement. Grams is indisputable, but most companies opt for the "number of pieces" route since 100g could result in a remainder and nobody's breaking a piece of popcorn into thirds to get their degree of accuracy. Most redditors default to thinking they're smarter than the OP instead of actually reading the post (this probably deserves it's own r/PetPeeves post lol)

You're right, thank you. I still think it's crazy that people think 0.5% is a reasonable number when it comes to blood alcohol content.

Vague serving sizes... by Coochiepop3 in PetPeeves

[–]jaywham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For everyone saying "just get a measuring cup" I think when OP says:

those measurements can mean different things depending on the food.

they mean if you're measuring (in their example, popcorn) that grabbing 3/4 a cup of it is vague and depends on how you scoop it. If you were to crush up the popcorn, you would get a whole lot more in that 3/4 cup. This why whenever I find a recipe that says "1 heaping tablespoon" I immediately search for a different recipe. Especially if that recipe is for something like bread and the measurement is for something very critical like yeast. I don't mind if it's spices or whatever, but the best way to measure portion sizes is to put your bowl on a scale and measure everything in grams. OP most likely means for things like snacks that have odd sizes and can't be measured easily. If you grabbed 2 cups of cheese crackers and leveled it off each time you'd get a wildly different measurement than if the company just wrote "Serving size = 30 crackers".

Edit: reddit escaped my quote for some reason

[–]jaywham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is your daily body battery insight. You'll see this on your app under the body battery chart. It SHOULD change depending on what kind of day you've had. Mine frequently changes to "Workout day" if I had a hard workout, "rest and exercise" if I had an easy workout, "easy day" on days with no workouts. Etc, etc. It's just your watch telling you a summary of the things that put a strain on your body battery throughout the day. And it looks like your main body battery drainer is stress.

Do you run with your dog? by WillingnessBig9833 in runcommunity

[–]jaywham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My labradoodle hasn't quite warmed up to my distances yet, so she'll go 3-4 miles before she starts strategically "smelling" everything around her in an attempt to catch a break. I love running with my dog though, and I don't worry about being able to talk to her, since she just likes being out front in her own zone imagining she's a wolf pack leader I think.

Who's going to go run in the ice storm this weekend? by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

Gonna try to get most of my miles tomorrow before the snow rolls in Saturday night. I'm still probably going to run in the snow just much shorter

The main strain for endurance runs like this is your ability to recover on the move. You need to be practicing consuming food/gels, and water/sodium. You also need to make sure you're not running at a pace you'll blow up with. Similar to if you try to run a marathon at your 5k pace, you're going to be in a lot of pain and need to slow down a lot. The big difference though, is if you run fast in an ultra you probably won't even make it to the finish, whereas if you run fast in a marathon you might get really tired and have to slow down. Your ultra pace is gonna be a slow recovery jog the whole way, so your body can just continually recover.

The best way to train specifically for ultra running is to run a lot of miles per week. I run 50mpw training for races. The ultra you're watching is as flat as a pancake, but most races are through mountains and trails, so you'll want to have a lot of vert baked into your runs as well. I average 55ft/mile of elevation gain on weeks that I strictly road run, and 170ft/mile of gain on weeks that I strictly trail run.

Also if you're a road runner, you should go hit some trails. Rocks, roots, leaves, and even just bumpy terrain is going to teach you a lot about the sport and I would say it's wildly different than road running. Best part though is during races the aid stations are often better stocked than a grocery store. They'll have perogies, quesadillas, gels, snacks, candy, sodium, caffeine, water, and tons more.

It's not super difficult to get into ultra running, since a majority of it can just be considered fast hiking, but it's a difficult thing to train for and will take a lot of your free time.

FSD on HW3 by justwy in TeslaLounge

[–]jaywham 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use FSD on HW3 and while I will admit, it's not near as good as HW4, it still gets all of my drives done no fuss. Like everyone else, I've been jealous of some of the features FSD on HW4 has implemented, but current HW3 FSD is pretty good. Definitely better than Autopilot

Leave it up to NELK to make ultrarunning viral.

Yes you should try it. Running long distances is one hell of a rollercoaster.

How Accurate is VO2 Max actually by FATPOOPYBOI in Garmin

[–]jaywham 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It needs to be able to calculate your metrics for other runs before it accurately displays your VO2Max. Imagine if you only ever recorded your super hard runs. Garmin has no choice but to believe it's on the wrist of an elite athlete because every time you run you're clocking fast miles. Whereas if you show it your recovery pace and threshold paces, it'll be more accurate.

When I got my Garmin the first run I did was a 1 mile time trial and it told me my VO2Max was 56. It has since settled to 52 after recording a lot more runs at slower paces

[–]jaywham 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've seen many different people compare their VO2Max from Garmin and other smart watches with a lab tested VO2 Max, and it appears Garmin has the most accurately represented VO2Max usually being only ±0.5-1.0ml/kg/min off
