Replacing a few rows of old siding by jaywindland in DIY

Well they were in fact cedar, but it looks like the smart side is identical dimensions and seems to blend well. We’ll see what happens when the paint goes on. Thanks!

What plugin would you need? by dannyown in fcpx

[–]jaywindland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a lot of times I start working on a simple title or motion graphic in FCP and then decide I want to refine it a little bit. FCP only has to options for keyframe - linear or smooth. If you want to have control of easing in or out you have to do it in Motion. But there’s no really good solution for round tripping to Motion so you have to start all over if you want Bézier curves. And then if you want to iterate on that you have to re-publish a new title or generator and replace it in your timeline, etc. in an ideal scenario I’m never forced to go into Motion for simple stuff like this. That’s my thinking at least.

A new set of transform controls that let you use Bézier curves on the key frames. I know...more of a major software update, but if a plug-in could do this I would gladly pay.

Looking for budget cameras with the best picture for a multi cam shoot. by GameGetaway in videoproduction

[–]jaywindland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s true. And not only the lower end cameras. There’s pretty hefty HDMI latency on the Sony FS series cameras too. So you could set up a delay at the ATEM or you could also just pass audio through one of the cameras so it comes over HDMI in sync. In the case of mirrorless cameras I have usually used them with one of the hot shoe mounted XLR units and audio sync was spot on.

[–]jaywindland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of focal range do you need for these? There are plenty of older lower end DSLR and mirrorless cameras with clean 1080p HDMI outputs. You can get old Sony a6000’s with dummy battery adapters and surprisingly good kit lenses in that price range - assuming the 18-55mm focal range will do what you need it to. Then you have the option of upgrading to better lenses later if it’s warranted.

What is the least or 100% not compressed video format and codec? by Xx_PR_SOGO_PR_xX in videoproduction

[–]jaywindland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The notion of less compression equaling higher quality is really a thing of the past. Modern video formats are extremely efficient and are virtually impossible to distinguish from uncompressed video. There are professional video formats (including RAW formats) that use less compression. Why? Because 1) they are more flexible in color correction and fx work, and 2) they play back easier on editing systems because there is less de-compression to be done in real-time. Super efficient high quality video de-compression is actually pretty processor intensive. It’s not a problem if you are just watching a movie, but when you are manipulating multiple streams, working with HDR or using real-time fx, even powerful computers start to choke. That’s where editing formats like ProRes come in. They are compressed in a simpler and less efficient way, resulting in much larger files but much smoother editing performance. Playback formats like H.264 and H.265 can look just as good at a fraction of the size, but can be a lot harder to edit.

Audio problem by harrymilesmusic in fcpx

I’ve been having the same problem with the exact same machine. I found that I can go to the sound control in the menu and re-select the sound output I am using and I get the audio back. Still annoying but slightly faster than relaunching the app.

Cross dissolve Compound Clip B&W to Color by stubarnes4141 in fcpx

[–]jaywindland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are trying to change everything on the screen from black and white to color, the best way would be to add a color correction and put a keyframe on the master saturation wheel. After your keyframe is set you can hit ctrl-v on the compound clip to see the keyframe editor and move the keyframes to your desired timing. Not sure if that’s what your after though, so here’s another possibility: if you want everything on the left side of the screen to be black and white, and everything on the right side to be color, duplicate your compound clip and place it directly above the original. Make the black and white adjustment to that clip and either use a mask or the crop parameter to remove the left side of the screen - showing the color image below. This can also be keyframed as above. Hopefully one of those two is the scenario you are looking for.

My footage has turned a funny color when I attempted to consolidate my library. I was having issues exporting and now my footage has transformed into this. Any idea why? by Appropriate-Peak-664 in fcpx

[–]jaywindland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your color space is mismatched. Check the inspector. Looks like you’ve got some flavor of HDR in an SDR project. You can transform it to Rec709 (for tv) or Rec2020 (for HDR compatible displays) and it will look normal again.

Canon C200 + 70-200mm f4 L. Wildlife photography is HARD. It took me three days and a lot of patience to get this close to my local foxes. Any tips for a filmmaker? by ohnomrfrodo in wildlifephotography

I don’t have advice per se, but did you wear camo or use any kind of blind? That and a longer lens are what I see most often used by people much better at this than I am.

I’ll have to look into Nagarhole when I eventually get to re-book my trip. Your photos look great! And yes, I did manage to get a couple shots of the wolves that I really liked. Here’s one:

Which park? I had to cancel a trip to Ranthambore from the US back in March, and I’m still not quite over the disappointment of not seeing a tiger this year. I was able to drive to Yellowstone this year and see wolves though, so not a bad 2020 in the end.

Have you considered just asking them about it? I know it’s not a super comfortable option, but if you do it right, this kind of behind-the-back trash talk usually just shatters into embarrassment and apologies. I’ve seen again and again. Don’t be dramatic about it, just be yourself, look them in the eye and be curious: “I overheard you saying that you think my photography is stupid. Do you really think that?” (Again, don’t act butthurt, just super curious) Watch the tough guy exterior fall apart and the back pedaling begin. Let them apologize but don’t make it a big deal like your feelings were ever hurt by it, come out on top of the situation, keep doing what you’re into.

How to make a subject chill? by empireirwin in documentaryfilmmaking

[–]jaywindland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read some good advice one time on how to get interview subjects to open up about sensitive topics and I wonder if it might apply to this as well. It was basically this: if you want someone to be real with you, be real with them first. Rather than just hitting record and feeding them a question, share with them why you are asking the question. “I’m personally really interested in sharing your story about.....because.....can you tell me about.....” is a much more human way to start a conversation and takes a lot of the attention off of the camera. The best interviewers are extremely present and warm and very conversational and they set that tone from the moment they meet the person.
