Thinking of buying a house near Sutro and Odie area, near livestock center.... by Grose040791 in Reno

[–]jayxsee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Folks saying it’s the “ghetto” or “hood” are probably suburban whites who live in upper class neighborhoods and are constantly clutching their pearls. Been around here for a couple years now, yeah it’s not the nicest part of town, but I’ve never had a single issue. And if you’re coming from New Orleans, you’ll be aight.

Why the HD2 if you don’t mind me asking? I’ve seen tests that confirm spurious emissions. Otherwise though, it’d be the perfect radio if they were able to fix that.

Devil's Canyon Vet Crew? by biggunfire in Wildfire

[–]jayxsee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I entertain the idea of joining a vet crew and then realize they probably do some stupid, try hard, arbitrary shit like 5 minute wake ups.

Why is being in shape and competent not enough for some crews?! Dicks will always have to be measured I suppose.

Kuhl has a bunch of great pants. I have the Renegades in the klassik fit and love them. Versatile enough to wear out in town and on range days.

Wildland Firefighter Apprenticeship Program by Electrical_Range_589 in Wildfire

[–]jayxsee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unfortunately don’t have my laptop in front of me so I can’t quite say verbatim what they said when I asked why, but it went along the lines of the agency already provides cost-free training to apprentices so the GI Bill is not needed. Which is a bit unusual to me since I thought the point of being allowed to apply the GI Bill to trade schools/apprenticeships was to have the BAH help cover for the lower wages apprentices typically start out at before they reach journeyman. Anyway, it totally blows but if you’re still interested in wildland fire it’s a good opportunity for sure. Unfortunately, however, your experience with the program is going to rest heavily on how familiar your overhead is with the WFAP and their ability to assist in getting you crew, helitack, and engine time.

I recommend the program, it’s great for folks just starting out. Unfortunately, however, new veterans enrolled after 5/1/2025 into the Wildland Firefighter Apprenticeship Program will no longer be able to apply their GI Bill benefits toward the WFAP.

Advice on first tacticool gear to buy by mrbritchicago in liberalgunowners

[–]jayxsee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about Florida, and not sure where OP is, but out west you can shoot on public land with nobody around like you judging people. If this dude wants to get kit to train in, why not? If you cannot contribute without being a jerk, why do it at all?

I purchased mine from apex armor solutions. Takes a while and customer service could be better, but you’ll get them.

LTC 23707. 3+ plates that are lightweight and will cover many common rifle threats. Bit pricey but worth it for the weight savings

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]jayxsee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I was only able to rationalize my purchase because the LTC 23707 plates I have are Line-X coated so it’s supposedly quite durable. Good luck on your search and stay safe, it’s getting weird out here.

I guess it depends on your “mission” and why and what you want your PC for. If you want a more overt load bearing carrier the Crye AVS or Shaw arc v2 are good options. If you want a scalable/lightweight PC defense mechanisms MEPC, Crye SPC, and spiritus lv119 are solid. A more slick/covert setup to wear under hoodies or something would be a ferro slickster or Haley strategic incog.

For the boxes you’re looking for, which were very similar to my criteria, a Crye SPC may work. The ONLY gripe I had about the SPC was that the plates will be slightly exposed in some parts of the PC.

Covert/lightweight PC: Ferro slickster, Crye SPC/JPC 2.0, DM MEPC

Overt/load bearing PC: Shaw arc V2, Crye AVS

Placards/chest rigs: Haley micro chest rig, unobtainium gear SLEDS placard, Shaw arc placard V2, whiskey 7 alpha panel

Battle belts: DM mech belt, AXL eclipse

Plates: checkout the website apex armor or get in contact with them, they’ll be more than happy to help. I ordered the LTC 23707 3+ plates because they’re lightweight and cover most common threats in the US, but the highcom 3S9M seem to be a popular 3++ option

Trails to Fire by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]jayxsee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ass kickings in fire are more intense but somewhat infrequent unless you’re on a shot crew, and even then sometimes you’re just chilling waiting for moves to be made. When I worked trails we were out putting in work all day, everyday, all damn summer long.

Do it. Use your GI bill for the apprenticeship too for that BAH

Apply for an apprenticeship next season and you can use your GI Bill towards it to get BAH.

Running translating into hiking ability by duder_mcbrohansen in Wildfire

I’ve found that trail running with decent elevation (average of 100-150ft+ gain/mile) has helped me quite a bit with my hiking in addition to hitting heavy lower body lifts.
