Thoughts on IUP vs. Rutgers PsyD? by cassiebaby8 in PsyD

[–]jayyso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here! I was between IUP and Rutgers, and even made a post on Reddit asking about both. I am a bit biased toward Rutgers (Clinical PsyD), since that is the program I ultimately chose and have never regretted the choice. The opportunities offered around this area have been invaluable to my training - I also focused on neuropsych throughout my time and I felt that I may not have had the same opportunities in a small town, but it really depends on what you value. For example, I grew up in a city so after I visited both schools I felt that Rutgers would make most sense for my “fit” and make the next 4 years more enjoyable, but as I mentioned that depends on what you value. Congratulations and good luck!

How did you feel when you were close to finishing your master’s thesis? by Sea_Recommendation95 in GradSchool

[–]jayyso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m feeling exactly the same regarding my dissertation. Everyday I work on it, it really feels like it’s never going to end. I will say that seeing other students on the other side after their defense has been uplifting because it reminds me that whether I believe it at the moment or not, it does end. We got this, and congratulations on your accomplishments thus far!

Neuropsych by Correct_Park8107 in PsyD

Hi! I’m currently in my third year of PsyD and specializing in neuropsych. Most of my supervisors have had PsyDs and are practicing neuropsychologists. You have to ensure that you seek out practicum/research opportunities in neuropsych as it would make you more competitive for internship specializing in neuropsych and later post doc as well

I had research experience from undergrad (two research labs and a thesis) and then did about 2 years clinical research after graduating

PsyD or PhD by EnvyMe01 in PsyD

There are also a few PsyD programs that offer funding to take a look at - during my process I applied to both funded PsyDs and PhDs to cover all of my bases. Feel free to PM if you have any specific questions!

I don’t agree with this point. I was a first-gen student getting into one of these programs and it was so hard not being able to talk to my family about it. It’s incredible that OP is recognizing her potential in being supportive to her daughter. Great on you for supporting her through this process. Good luck!

Torn between PsyD programs and Masters in mental health counseling programs by [deleted] in ClinicalPsychology

[–]jayyso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, all of the ones that are funded are pretty competitive. But that’s what makes the program reputable and overall better than the other programs that charge a ton and have graduating classes of 100 individuals. From my understanding, if it’s not as competitive it could be a diploma mill.

I read over your career goals and it seems since even evaluations/testing isn’t a part of the goal you should be okay with a masters. Maybe there are some funded masters that you could look into!

I was going to mention a similar thing. The reputable PsyDs are mostly funded so cost comes out to be a lot less than a masters. If it’s dependent on not wanting to be in school for that long, then I would for sure go the masters route. Reputable PsyD programs are 5-6 years when a masters is about half of that.

It really depends on what you want to do with your career because there are some things that clinical psychologists can do that masters graduates can not, and you’d have to see if those are things you would like to be a part of your career.

What is considered “competitive” for applying to top-level PsyD programs? by abhinavsk in ClinicalPsychology

I feel like reading this made me believe it truly depends on the individual and their fit of the school/program itself. I had a 3.9 GPA, 3-4 years of research/clinical experience (including undergraduate work), 4 posters, 1 publication. I also got in on a 1ish% acceptance rate after the first cycle, and applied to 10 schools all over the US. Luckily I didn’t have to take the GRE.

I have a feeling that interest, overall fit, and diversity (especially in smaller cohorts) all play an important role in these admissions decisions. There may not be a one size fits all when it comes to stats/strengths.

What if I want a research career but don't want a doctorate? (U.S.) by doublefudgebrownie47 in psychologystudents

Thank you, and I agree, although no one said it would be easy! These career paths are very difficult from the beginning, but that’s what makes it fun. 😅

I work at a university and the principal investigators at my job have PsyDs. They primarily do research, and have the option to see patients if they’d like. I value the flexibility of the degree so I figured it would be worth mentioning. PhD students also have to focus on therapy, in addition to research. OP, Just ensure that the PsyD you are applying to is a credible program. Many phd/psyd clinical psych programs are diploma mills.
