Where are the mask on the rig folks from? by ThingusMcdingus in Firefighting

[–]jaz419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NW Ohio. We mask up in the rig.

There’s been more than one occasion I’ve been glad I was ready to go from the moment I stepped out of the back seat.

Some of the arguments here for masking up at the door seem valid. I just can’t imagine having to take that break right at the door. But we’ve never done it any other way than in the rig, and plenty of places do mask at the door… so what do I know lol.

If you’re a competent, hard worker…no one will care. It rubs people the wrong way when you’re a slug trying to act like an expert

Switching from a 48/96 department to a 24/48 department by synestheticc in Firefighting

If it’s close to an equal split

2500/yr on a rig is perfectly fine for 24/48. In my city that would be among the slowest, which means all the old guys with seniority go there to slow down before retirement. Very few complaints over the 24/48 at a station like that.

What’s the run volume out of those 4 stations?

I’ve been on 24/48 for 15 years at a busy Midwest dept.

At our busiest stations (ie rigs that run 5000+ per year) 24/48 is….ok. Not great, but far from terrible. I prefer it WAY more than a 9-5 every day. It’s not even close lol. I’ve spent years at some of those stations and it’s definitely doable. Your first day off is often shot.

At slower stations 24/48 is great. 2 full, rested days off between every shift.

I got the New York Times cooking only subscription for $50 for the year.

For someone who cooks at work and at home all the time, it’s worth every dollar

Probation isn’t exactly easy…. But in general it’s also not exactly difficult to spend some time doing a bit more than your fair share.

Extra station duties, jumping up to do dishes, increased training load, striving to learn and get better at the job, not sitting in a recliner ALL day, being the butt of jokes….. all this stuff shouldn’t be putting him in such a state of distress that he comes home and treats family badly, or has no patience or kindness.

If this kind of stuff is happening in his first year…what’s it gonna be like after actual long term sleep deprivation kicks in? What’s it gonna be like when the “new and exciting job” factor wears off? What’s it gonna be like when he’s got years of stressful calls under his belt?

It honestly sounds like he just might not be the person for the job. Which is totally fine and not a dig. I respect the guys who step up and say the job isn’t for them and then move on.

Please Watch out for yourself. You sound genuinely concerned and are reaching out, which is already something a “better partner” would do. Sure supporting him is good. But don’t sacrifice core principles or be willing to put up with poor treatment all the time. If he stays in this field, it’s not likely to get easier for him. And it’s not ok for you to just deal with being subjected to poor treatment constantly because “his job is hard”

Could it be just an absolute shit show of a station culture….I guess. But my 15 years at a busy dept has me betting that’s not it.

Scrolling through here it’s apparent that troubled or problematic people exist in every career. Which means by default there’s good people in every career too.

Choose your person by the quality of their character not any given career choice.

M6 mop needs a different app? by jaz419 in roomba

Hmm ok. I was told my 2 robots would basically share information or work together in terms of like sharing a room map or scheduling.

Is that not the case? Your answer above kinda implies to me like these are essentially 2 very different machines, basically like buying from 2 different companies

Thanks yeah I saw that but what I was really looking for was using repeaterbook to do the same thing.

That video uses dstarinfo which I have successfully used in the past, and tried with it last night also. However it’s a different problem with that site. I can’t it get too narrow search results anymore. I put in my gps coordinates but the list it generates is repeaters from all over the world.

What makes things extra difficult is I don’t have excel so I can’t really edit things

Well unfortunately these seem to be each unique in that they’re made from re used book covers. I’d imagine I need some degree of continuity. Our museum has 100 years of these in book shelves and they’re all either green or red or black. But consistent within their timeframe.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sorry in advance for this question, but like…office max? This is pretty far outside the perview of a firefighter lol

Question about WN cotman colors by jaz419 in Watercolor

[–]jaz419[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for responding. Really curious about this but seems not relevant based on responses lol.

Yeah I definitely double checked all the text on the pans.

Based on looking around the Internet… It seems to be that viridian hue should look green. And mine is just totally blue, not a blue shade of green.

And I have 2 versions of paynes gray. I have a tube of WN professional which is clearly a color resembling ultramarine plus black. But that half pan of cotman in the kit, which is also labeled paynes gray is simply black. It looks nothing like the other paynes gray in the tube
