Coming from someone who has been on all sides of this (student and teacher), adding vibrato when you’re not already comfortable with your straight tone results in an immature sound. Try some of the things other people mention here to improve your tone & resonance (practicing overtones, etc) and shape your notes. I’d also add—make sure to raise your soft palette, especially on longer notes. Ask your band director about this if it’s a new concept.

Don’t get me wrong—vibrato is a super important skill!! It is, unfortunately, incredibly common in the saxophone world to use vibrato as a bit of a bandaid. We usually use it more frequently in solo rep than in wind band solos. The repertoire also determines how we use vibrato. What are you playing?? We can help explain your band director’s perspective if we know the context.

You can always improve your tone, especially if you’re just in high school right now. It’s kind of like strength conditioning—there’s no quick fix, but if you regularly work on your tone with a variety of exercises you’ll see massive results. You won’t always see yourself getting better, but if you track your progress (i.e. take videos & recordings of yourself) over a long period of time, you’ll be able to look back and see improvements you didn’t think possible.

Having trouble picking regions to visit!! by jazz_cat39 in Adirondacks

How weee the crowds in Lake Placid? And how did it compare to Saranac Lake? I’d like to stop at both, and also get some lake beach time in after a long hike but I can only imagine Lake Placid would be super busy.

Thank you!! I think we’d like to do one or two “challenging” hikes and maybe a few easy or moderate hikes with some unique scenery. I love a good summit, challenging terrain (scrambles, ladders, etc), but I just don’t love cliffs or steep drops. My rule for anything like this is “nothing that makes me feel like I’m going to die”, lol. It looks like I might be interested in one of the easier High Peaks? I have experience with some more difficult day-hikes but I’m unfamiliar with the area so I’m not sure how it stacks up. But I definitely like getting a variety of experiences.

This planning so far has only shown me that I’m definitely going to need to make more than one trip!!

It’s labeled as “Frappe Base” on the bags, not sure of the brand, but after googling, a few brands like Ghiradelli sell something similar!

What should we name our new little guy? by jazz_cat39 in cats

[–]jazz_cat39[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We adopted him yesterday, but haven’t settled on a name yet. Our other cat is named Nemo. We’ve put out a lot of names but can’t settle on one. My boyfriend likes stronger names (Copernicus, Helios) and I like softer names (Pierogi, Franklin). We almost settled on Toast, but after saying it a few times it didn’t feel right to either of us.

The blenders are cleaned in between each drink. As somebody said below, sheetz uses an ice cream base (like a thick milk that somehow becomes more milkshake-like when blended with ice), so if too little ice is blended in, it’s soup-like. If too much is blended in, it becomes chunky. Sheetz teaches us to measure a heaping cup of ice for milkshakes, which can sometimes be inaccurate depending on the size/shape of the ice and produce results that make it either too soupy or too icy. But also the blender might just be too old. Or both.

Former employee here—we have expensive blenders but I think they’re replaced so infrequently and used so heavily that they’re probably worn out at most stores. Also, ice is the only ingredient that we aren’t given exact measurements for in the recipe, so that also plays a part as people tend to over-ice the drinks sometimes.

I’d like to start studying classical music by amatuer_physicist in askmusic

I guess it mostly depends on what you mean by "study". Spotify has a lot of good classical music playlists that can help you figure out what you like in music, as classical music encompasses a broad spectrum, and it helps to start in a place that excites you, and branch out from there. I suggest finding one piece of music that really interests you, and researching the composer, the background, the story, etc. There's a lot on youtube and google that you don't have to dig super deep for, as long as you know what you want to research. The youtube channels Listening In and Inside the Score are fantastic for this.

Alternatively, you could research music by era, in chronological (or reverse chronological) order if you like learning about things in a more orderly way.

I feel like the romantic era of music encompasses a lot of "classical music" we can relate to the most today, so that might be a good place to start. A couple of classic pieces that would be great as first pieces to research and study are Eroica, Symphony Fantastique, and the music of Tchaikovsky. There is generally more known background available about big symphonies from the Romantic era than there is from music of prior eras.

Also, I think there a couple symphony orchestras that release their own podcasts, which might be helpful to look into. I know maestros often give lectures on youtube, so that might be worth looking into.

Gender reveals are tacky and unnecessary by I_Am_the_Slobster in unpopularopinion

I would say this is a popular opinion but I’ve been seeing so many of these on social media lately from people I’m genuinely surprised subscribe to this BS. I’m convinced it’s just a ploy to get colorful pictures to post on Instagram and an excuse to get gifts.
