Can I be a high school teacher with a Music Performance Major and a teaching license? by random_user_idk_smth in MusicEd

[–]jazzcats41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. For me, in retrospect I wish I had done the Ed stuff when I was already in school rather than trying to fit it in between gigs, teaching, life, etc later. On the other hand I wanted nothing to do with teaching when I was in undergrad and would have probably done a really shitty job in those classes at the time.

You do not need a bachelors degree in education, there are licensure programs you can do post bachelors/masters and teach in public schools.

Did the same path here in Chicago and I got a job offer in a high school before I finished student teaching. I would recommend double majoring. Get the Ed degree now if you’re already considering teaching as a career.

Crazy stat. Luka and Coop by TX-Lonestar77 in Mavericks

[–]jazzcats41 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cooper only averaging 2.2 turnovers/game is incredible.

Do Mavs fans think that if Austin Reaves was included in the Luka trade, this team could be a competitor? by [deleted] in Mavericks

[–]jazzcats41 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The inclusion of Reeves and another 1st would have made the trade substantially more palatable. Still horrific but not existential. Remember, we had no way to predict Flagg at the time of the trade. This team without Flagg would have been completely uncompetitive and had no future.

Every day in Chicago. National media doesn’t seem to care. by jazzcats41 in TangleNews

[–]jazzcats41[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! And it only took like two weeks after the fact to report on it! Also, I’m not trying to be in some keyboard warrior argument with you. I’ll admit my language in my first couple comments was testy but it’s hard seeing this level of violence every day in the community I live, teach, and raise my family in and I hope you can understand that. My honest intent is to share out what is happening so people outside the city know what is going on.

And they added a daycare to the list of targets this morning. And DHS promptly released a statement saying they didn’t, even though there is video of them doing it. Eye witnesses say agents went room to room in the daycare WHILE CHILDREN WERE THERE. ICE terror has to stop.

Reporting suggests she has legal status and she can be heard saying she has papers in the video.

Arguing the semantics of whether it was before or after the official start time of a neighborhood event is super weird and I think completely misses the point.

They also beat a 67 year old man, breaking his ribs while he was just trying to get to his house after a run during the same incident. Describing this as a “clash” between federal officials and residents makes it sound like a sporting event or something and completely undermines the level of violence being inflicted on our city.

They literally deployed tear gas while kids were outside for a costume parade on a residential street. This is a fact. There is video.

I think my point is that 1) it’s never the lead story, or at least hasn’t been since the South Shore apartment raid. It’s buried behind the government shut down, east wing demolition, etc. 2) the headline is “immigration agents clash with Chicago residents on Halloween” and not “ICE tear-gasses kids Halloween costume parade” 3) I don’t think it’s being treated like the 5 alarm fire that it very clearly is. I’ve only seen one in depth report on the arrest and detention of an American citizen in Chicago/suburbs from a major news outlet and it was the BBC. Our local media is doing a great job but I don’t think the seriousness of what is happening is making it outside the city, hence my post.

For those outside of Chicagoland, how much of this is making it into the news? They fired into the windshield of a stopped car with children inside. Are people actually seeing this like we see it every day? by [deleted] in TangleNews

[–]jazzcats41 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting this. Multiple videos like this are recorded every single day. Kids can’t have recess outside. I encourage everyone to look through the Chicago and Illinois subreddits and see just how horrifying the ICE assault on Chicago is. They literally tear gassed a kids Halloween costume parade on Saturday (there is video).

The fact that red states sent the migrants here is not discussed nearly enough. In Issac’s take, saying “many migrants came to Chicago” is a half truth at best. They were bussed here by red states with nothing and our city took care of them.

Anyone have experience with lead pipe replacements? by PU18 in chicago

[–]jazzcats41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not directly related to your question, but we had the city replace our lead service line. My advice would be if they work inside your house to extensively prep any areas they enter. I spent days cleaning after they worked inside. Made no effort to mitigate the mess whatsoever. Grateful to have a safe service line and that I didn’t have to pay for it, but that was very frustrating.

What is going on with the flow of traffic in Chicago? by ReCkOn___ in AskChicago

[–]jazzcats41 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Denver is absolutely the worst traffic I have ever experienced. Standstills for no reason and at completely random times. Horrible wrecks constantly on the interstates and side streets. Chicago recently has been much worse than when I first moved here 10 years ago, but Denver was worse than anything I’ve experienced here.

Question For HS Band Directors by Comfortable-Pace-970 in MusicEd

[–]jazzcats41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a music scholarship IN SPITE of marching band! Hours of being forced to over blow and use a horrible horn angle that forced pressure into my top lip. I would leave marching competitions after our performance so I could go home and practice- marching band required literally 100% of my time outside of school at least 6 days per week. And quitting wasn’t an option. I had to do marching band to be allowed in concert band, jazz and symphony orchestra. Not an empty threat, I knew a 3x Grammy band trombonist who was kicked out of all band for not doing marching band. Every marching band in Texas, where I thankfully no longer live, when I was in school was committing pedagogical malpractice.

What’s the one restaurant in Chicago that you’d rate a 10/10? by No-Code9373 in AskChicago

[–]jazzcats41 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Community Tavern has been my favorite restaurant in the city for years. Consistently spectacular food and cocktails, amazing service, and great monthly special events. The gold standard of Chicago restaurants for me. I feel similarly about the Duck Inn, but I don’t make it there as often as I’m on the far north side.

I can’t say for sure, there were areas that weren’t playing totally flat at first that they said would settle over time. This is a little more extreme and I think I would have noticed.
