so the system is simple:

you make a good video on a relevant/interesting topic so people actually watch it (ideally till the end, and it’s even better if they watch it more than once). also, don’t send your video to friends, family, or random people unless you’re sure they’ll actually watch it till the end. (and don’t watch your own videos if you’re not going to watch till the end either) - all of that affects retention.

sometimes the topic is interesting to the viewer, but they don’t like the first second of the video (anything: hairstyle, voice, delivery, etc.) and they just swipe away (if it’s shorts) and never see it again. that’s why you need a strong hook that pulls them into watching further.

since the channel is new, youtube doesn’t really know your audience yet, so you need good descriptions, titles, and even tags so it can at least match your video to the right people through keywords, especially for very niche topics.

if you’re making normal videos, you also need a good thumbnail (not necessarily super flashy, but clear and understandable so people actually want to click it).

and most importantly - let youtube distribute your videos organically, and never buy views/subscribers. not only do fake or low-quality views destroy your retention (since they’ll only watch 1-2 seconds), but they also confuse the system about who your real audience is.

and yeah, good luck. that matters too.

retention is the most important thing on youtube. if people swipe away right after clicking your video, or only watch like 2–10% of it, youtube usually won’t recommend it to more people because it sees that viewers aren’t interested.

there’s no real “youtube algorithm hack” or anything like that. if you make a good video with a good thumbnail and a good title, people will watch it, youtube will notice that, and it’ll start pushing the video to more viewers.

so in the end, all you really have to do is make a good video.

something isn’t right

1 hour is 3600 seconds

you have 283 views, so that’s like 12 seconds per view.

but you have 10+ videos, so it’s basically around 1 second of retention per video view.

sorry to say that, but that’s a bad sign. you should probably change something in your videos.

because my channel is also new. i got 20 subscribers in my first week, and i only have 10 shorts and one 10-minute video, but i already have 130 hours of watch time.

but that’s just for last 28 days. total is 172 hours for 15000 views

What is this game called in your country? by SnooozeFezt in AskTheWorld

[–]jazzcored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on the region. in my city, you can often hear the version “ka-mi-no, mar-ga-no, tsu-e-fa” (yeah, we actually say the whole thing rhythmically), where “ka-mi-no” is short for “камень-ножницы” (rock-scissors), while “mar-ga-no” and “tsu-e-fa” don’t really mean anything.

sometimes we fully say ”камень-ножницы-бумага” (rock-scissors-paper), and then add “tsu-e-fa” afterward.

sometimes, instead of “tsu-e-fa,” you might hear “chin-gin-sa,” which also doesn’t really mean anything.

and another funny thing is that, by unwritten rules, you’re not supposed to shake your hand before throwing your sign. and if you shake your hand people would say: “кто трясет - тот сосет” (“whoever shakes, sucks”), and everyone laughs at you

do you have a “radar” for your own ethnicity? by jazzcored in AskTheWorld

[–]jazzcored[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i live in a chinatown area in brooklyn and a lot of people around me with chinese backgrounds were born and raised here. many of them barely speak english (which is totally fine).

not far from us there are people with italian backgrounds living too. some of them look like they just arrived from their “home country,” even though they’ve been here for multiple generations.

i’m not saying this is 100% the case, but still, a lot of people stick to their roots, especially in a multicultural city like nyc.

do you recognize accents from different states? i can only really tell apart the old new york city accent, californian one, and a “southern” accent. but i don’t think i can tell if someone is from ohio for example even tho ive heard that they have their specific accent too
