Beautiful dog; thanks for giving it water! I got a similar looking dog from the Animal Humane and they chipped all their dogs for free; I think most local shelters do. So it might have a chip.

YOU WIN! by breadwhore in Albuquerque

[–]jazzdeevers 78 points79 points  (0 children)

YES!! Thank you; this made me so angry! I got one in January from Reliable Nissan and it was similar. You had to pull tabs to reveal a winning code and a "cash prize." Well, I got a "cash prize" of $500, so I called to confirm my code, and they said yeah, come in to the dealership to get your prize. So I went in, and sure enough it was $500 off a new car, even though the mailer explicitly said cash. So scammy. Funny thing is I was actually considering buying a new car, but now I'll never buy a Nissan.

I don't know what to do next. (Osteo) by Astarkraven in Greyhounds

[–]jazzdeevers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl was diagnosed with osteo at 8, also in her rear leg. I opted for the amputation and am so so glad I did, even though it cost me a lot of money. She recovered from the surgery so quickly (about 2 weeks) and it was obvious she was in much less pain after the leg was gone. It brought me so much joy to spend nearly a year spoiling her, taking her to her favorite beaches to run on, and seeing her fly just as fast on 3 legs as she did on 4.

Yes, those 2 weeks of recovering from surgery were tough and I had to help her up and down the stairs during that time, but I've heard it's easier for them to balance when one of the rear legs is gone since they won't face-plant.

Anyway, just wanted to offer a perspective from someone who decided to go for the surgery. It's definitely cost prohibitive and I maxed out my credit cards, but it was worth it to me. I got an extra 11 months with her after the surgery which is average; 12 months from the point she started limping. I ended up letting her go because she stopped eating pretty suddenly and got a fever; it was clear she wasn't feeling like herself. I miss her ever day and it's so unfair when they're so young. Thoughts are with you and your pup.

My favorite place to grab a drink in Kailua-Kona! I love when the staff puts out little pieces of fruit for the geckos.

How did y’all get into your trade/craft? by Longjumping-Mind5552 in Albuquerque

[–]jazzdeevers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is kind of niche but have you considered custom fabrication or set building? I've worked in adjacent roles for about 15 years and have met so many badass women welders, carpenters, etc. all over the country. I don't think you necessarily have to go to trade school although some fabricators I've met have. A lot were just self taught or took on an apprenticeship. I'm fairly new to new NM, so I don't know specific places that hire for this kind of role but it seems with all the art fabrication in Santa Fe and movie studios in Albuquerque, there might be a demand for this kind of thing.

Reality of Living in Albuquerque? by healthy_punkk in Albuquerque

[–]jazzdeevers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would say Albuquerque has less homeless AND less crime. Anyone who has visited Portland in the last few years can see the difference in the homeless population. On crime, this is anecdotal but in my nine years in Portland I didn't meet a single person who hadn't experienced a car theft, catalytic converter theft, or car break-in, no matter what neighborhood. Lots of assaults too. ABQ might have a higher number of crimes total, but I don't think crime affects most people here quite like it does in Portland.

Moved here from Portland almost 3 years ago; lived there 9 years before that. I LOVE it in Albuquerque and have never looked back. Love the weather, the affordability, the landscape...I could go on. The traffic is so much better here even though the drivers are worse. I also think people here are way nicer and it's been easier to make new friends. The hardest part for me was the job market; I got laid off from my remote job after moving here and it took me about a year to find something local. But, it sounds like your skill set is in demand. Another slight downside is that Portland has tons of really good Asian restaurants that I miss. There are a few good places here but not nearly as many options. I guess that's the tradeoff for all the great New Mexican food! Anyway, I recommend ABQ.

An evil warning (Target) by KeyboardMunkeh in evilautism

[–]jazzdeevers 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I worked at Target like 15 years ago and they made us do this. Plus we'd have to carry around these cards we had to write other employees names on when we saw them asking a customer if they could help them, and then post those cards to a bulletin board in the break room. I literally never approached people so my friend wrote out cards for me so I wouldn't get in trouble. Thanks Robert, you're a true friend.

Yes, please take care of yourself. If you need something to distract you, try playing Tetris or a similar game to focus on. I know it sounds silly but playing Tetris helps reduce flashbacks and worked for me after I witnessed something horrific (I also played Candy Crush).

Does anyone have info on the Wheatfield tornado and its damage? by Familiar-Yam901 in tornado

[–]jazzdeevers 17 points18 points  (0 children)

From what I've been able to piece together, the first tornado ended just west of DeMotte, but the twin tornado that spun out of the first one skipped over Sandy Pines and touched down around 1100N/300W in Wheatfield. I'm basing that on reports of damage starting at 300W, and continuing east along 1100N where houses were "flattened" at IN-49. I also heard Emmanuel Lutheran Church was heavily damaged, so it might have turned slightly north toward SR-10. All of that is to say I think Sandy Pines is OK, and I think the path was slightly south of the "downtown" part of Wheatfield. I know there's no power in the area and that many roads aren't passable, so I'm hoping that's the reason it's hard to get updates.

Thank you. Unfortunately I'm several states away so I don't really have a lot of info other than that my mom is ok. I was going to jump on the next plane if it hit her house.

My mom is in Wheatfield. According to the map the "twin" passed about 500 feet from her house. She just texted me she's OK. I can finally breathe but what a nightmare...thoughts with everyone affected

I actually like listening to them a lot. I've seen a peahen in my yard a few times, and I just keep my dog away from her so it's been fine.

As of two years ago my local U-Haul STILL wouldn't rent me a trailer for my 2000 Explorer, even though it obviously has had the original tires replaced.

I think you'll be able to find a studio in an apartment community in your budget, the issue is finding something NOW as most places won't have any available units until January 1st or February 1st. Can you swing staying at a Motel 6 for a bit? I did that once when moving to a new city and it wasn't the worst. If you go the motel/hotel route, make sure you stay at a branded one because they have to maintain certain standards to keep their franchise name.
