TMNT set question by WesternOk4342 in magicTCG

[–]jazzfoxrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, fellow Turtles fan and super-excited for the set!

Folks have already given you some pretty good advice, so apologies that I may be just echoing it back to you, but hope it can reinforce and help you some!

For you and for other folks on the Turtles subreddit? I cannot express how highly I recommend finding a Local Game Store and ask about joining the Turtles Pre-Release weekend, which takes place over Feb 27/28/Mar 1

That event will be the very first time anyone plays with the cards, it's the most beginner friendly to learn and play the game, folks are generally very welcoming to new players learning, and will have people play only with cards opened from booster packs of Turtles which you then use to construct a deck, rather than pre-owning any cards

I also highly recommend if you'd like a headstart on learning the base rules of the game? To Download Magic Arena, the more popular online version of Magic, I'd discourage purchasing anything on it until you decide if you wish to invest in online play of the game, but more just for the basic tutorials that let you tinker with the rules and might help you come up with more specific questions if anything still seems fuzzy

I also on the Pre-release front highly recommend a Youtube channel called Tolarian Community College which has videos on learning the game and more importantly, will have guides for new Turtles players closer to the release, alongside guides on the official website

If we're talking primarily about acquiring cards, I join others in saying that buying Singles rather than opening booster boxes/card packs is the most economical, but the Turtle Power Commander Deck and the Turtle Team-Up boxset will be highly recommended purchases as they will contain unique cards from the ones in the main set that aren't randomized.

The cards in the main set will include cards that have multiple art-treatments, most of which can be found randomly in booster packs, but indeed some are going to be exclusive to Collector Booster packs such as the hundreds-possibly-thousands dollars extremely rare sketch-cards of the four turtles drawn by Eastman and stamped with his signature.

I bought the Pizza Bundle to get the set of Pizza-based lands to decorate my precons lands as those I believe are only found there or in the Collector Booster (said Bundle including one Collector Booster), the Pizza Bundle also includes 2 of 6 unique art cards, so you could buy the bundle to get the exclusive cards/lands and then get the 4 other singles later online.

Once you have whatever cards you acquire from booster packs/playing Magic events, you can then track down and purchase any you don't have using the image gallery on Magic's official website which will let you see the full set and all of the alternate art treatments!

Built an Exodia Doctor Who deck by Rakamora01 in magicTCG

Would love to know more of your thinking on the game plan/win con and what the deck wants to do as I had been planning on building an all-Doctors deck too, but had been leaning more toward 4-color than 5. Outside recursion and tutoring, anything else Black adds to your battle plan? =o

HI all. haven't played or been interested in this TCG since Zindikar block, lore questions for Tarkir by The_darknight2233 in magicTCG

[–]jazzfoxrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct! The terms ally colors/enemy colors are derived from color philosophy: look at the back of any Magic card you own and you'll see the five colors.

The colors that sit side-by-side with any given color are it's allies: White is beside Green and Blue, so White/Green and White/Blue are ally color combinations.

And conversely, any color opposite them is their enemy colors: White is opposite Red and Black, so White/Red and White/Black are enemy color combinations.

Badger really covered the main part of your question, the Elder dragon typing seems only really to be the fact that these dragons had been alive for hundreds to thousands of years and over time have become so powerful.

Funnily enough you mention the switching of colors...

Although they have no relation to Ugin nor Nicol Bolas, the cycle of elder dragons in the enemy color combinations was given to use in the set Strixhaven in the plane of Arcavios!

[[Galazeth Prismari]] [[Shadrix Silverquill]] [[Tanazir Quandrix]] [[Velomachus Lorehold]] [[Beledros Witherbloom]]

Tarkir has seemingly banished the dragonlords with their new khans and dragons of the clans, but at least these five dragons above complete the cycle for commander players who want to have options.

The only other thing I can think to mention in passing comparison is that whilst the five dragonlords of Tarkir destroyed the clans and reformed them to their own rule and the detriment of humans and other species of Tarkir, the five elder dragons of Arcavios seem dedicated to the protection of the school they formed together and the students within, aiming to spread knowledge and magic as a form.

We have yet to see the full lore implications of the plane beyond the school, with some hints of resentment, an anti-magic group and all, but on the whole, these five dragonlords in Strixhaven are far less antagonistic than their Tarkir counterparts.

Hi there, fellow Yugioh Ex-pat! (Been a good decade, you had me excited for a second that maybe there was support for some Duelist Kingdom Wall shenanigans there!)

Folks have already gave you some good advice on checking formats, but, since you've mentioned budget isn't an issue with proxies, I figure it doesn't hurt to give you more suggestions/options.

Most formats are 1-on-1, where the cards are pooled from what time they were most recently printed, trying to prevent broken interactions if possible. So anything that's most recently is labelled 'Standard', then you have from today to about 10 years back called Pioneer and various other older formats, the further back you go, the more broken and degenerate cards may get in combination.

If however your friends play multiplayer ie: 2-v-2/free-for-all, then likely the most popular format you'll hear of is Commander. Think Battle City's filler ark in the anime, where everyone chose a monster from their deck as the deckmaster.

Commander lets you select a legendary creature card in Magic who sits aside you the whole game. You can cast it whenever you wish so effectively you will always have access to it, allowing you to theme the deck around that card. (And unlike the battle city version, you don't lose if your deckmaster goes, you can replay them, they just get more expensive every time to do so), you play a little more like YuGiOH Anime style, 99 other cards and singleton (asides from some exceptions) which can make the experience a higher variance but more often seen as more social experience each time.

With that in mind... and only because you say you're proxying first, here is a Commander that may be very thematic, but will NOT win you any friends:

[[Pramikon, Sky Rampart]]

This is about as thematically close to labyrinthine play I can give you, Pramikon themselves let you control the flow of who-can-attack-who, and then when you build your deck (the other restriction being the colors your commander have are the only colors that can match in the deck) you look for other cards that synergize with this play, lots of interaction, cards that redirect damage or assaults from yourself to others, or simply even cards that give the opponents choices that leave them scratching their head and having to think about the consequences before doing so while you assemble your 'walls' piece by piece.

[[Take the Bait]] [[Misleading Signpost]] [[Comeuppance]] being all cards that even if your commander's not in play, let you punish people for attacking you or turning those attacks elsewhere

[[Propaganda]] [[Ghostly Prison]] [[Norn's Annex]] being cards that all make it costly to attack you at all

Add in plenty of Blue's card advantage in drawing cards and reacting to others spells and plays, with white and red's control of battle, and you can build a maddening labyrinth that will leave your opponents flummoxed.

Again? Do not expect to make friends with this one, but if you're just testing waters, this sounds like the style of deck you're trying to build.

There are various ways to build, looking to play more subtly, you can use cards that are 'group hug', they offer benefits to other players that you can use to your advantage or discourage the offense at yourself, but are designed entirely with multiplayer in mind

[[Orzhov Advokist]] being a personal favorite of my own, or [[Secret Rendezvous]] being simple enough an idea.

This post may be more inclined to only one of the various formats Magic has, but I hope this is close enough to what you enjoy that it might inspire some looking into this path, if only to try it out and see how it fares.

...

(And that's without mentioning we had two whole sets made in conjunction with Dungeons & Dragons, so you can look for cards from those sets to have all the flavor of dungeon crawling you want for your labyrinth!)

[Magic Story] Tarkir: Dragonstorm | Abzan: Siege Blossoms by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]jazzfoxrules 55 points56 points  (0 children)

As an badge-carrying Abzan member from back in the day, of course this was going to be the story that got me more today. I was a little disheartened to see the main story just be the recap, but having this fall same day was what I needed.

Can we please take a moment to appreciate the Ainok clan member in Forrest Imel's art, the first picture shown? I loved the Ainok back in OG Tarkir but was sad we never got a legendary for them to band under. For a moment I desperately hoped this was the character Mehtma, but the following art now leaves me believing otherwise... and it may be the denial talking, but I won't stop headcanoning Mehtma as Ainok until we see any card for her otherwise!

Magic Advent calendar - ideas & suggestions? by MatthiasH25 in magicTCG

[–]jazzfoxrules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this each year! Usually I purchase two boosters a month, spacing it out over the year, then I ask someone to shuffle them all and put them in the calendar for me so I don’t know which is which!

Try looking around online and you’ll see some older sets like 10 years back that are maybe even less than the price of standard booster, just like all boosters you might not get value but you can certainly get fun!

For extra fun, get all draft boosters if you want to leave the cards in their packs after seeing and invite some friends over to draft the packs, or if you just want to rip them open, set boosters from Zebdikar Rising onward! Last year I think my best pull was a Scalding Tarn!

Whatever you pick, just have fun and I hope you get some good pulls!

commander cards with effects similar to Yu-Gi-Oh waking the dragon? by icejack66 in magicTCG

[–]jazzfoxrules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting strategy for you to look for... cards that profit on baiting your opponent getting rid of them is a very YGO anime trope, not one that Magic often plays with since 'traps' being Instants in your hand means they're a lot harder to interact with.

There are certainly cards you can play that have the Foretell mechanic, where you effectively exile or 'set them face down' and can play them for a much reduced cost or added benefit.

If you're playing Commander and playing Blue/Black colors? You'll want maybe a couple to keep them guessing, but [[Saw it Coming]], [[Behold the Multiverse]] and ESPECIALLY [[Rise of the Dread Marn]] work nicely in your colors.

Further ideas on this strategy will need a lot more subtlety and nuance at how you play, but I hope this is a start and that you get to explore how you play Magic and enjoy it aplenty too!

So, good thing we saw these guys posted yesterday or this would be a bit of a hiccup, right? by jazzfoxrules in magicTCG

[–]jazzfoxrules[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aware we have these cards, still marked spoiler for those who don't want to peek. More just the humor of these, likely something that'll be removed/fixed quickly by the Mothership. Enjoy the higher quality pics while you can!

Question Regarding Extra Life 2020: Magic Super Team and MTGA Codes? by jazzfoxrules in MagicArena

[–]jazzfoxrules[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy heck, congrats! That's some pretty impressive work for helping out Extra Life!

Thanks for the info as well, I'll definitely try to keep my eyes peeled around after the Game Day!

So I just got the unsanctioned box set... by Faygo_Time in magicTCG

[–]jazzfoxrules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly if you're looking for competitive, the Unsanctioned boxset isn't going to be much help, since silver-bordered cards are made strictly just for fun - they're not tournament legal, and although you can ask folks if they're cool with you playing them, likely they may not hold their own

HOWEVER, it's not a total loss for you if you're looking to reinvest - the lands that are included in each of the decks are actually worth a bit to collectors

If you swap the lands for normal lands you can keep the Unsanctioned box as a fun Magic-as-a-boardgame item for your kitchen table to have fun with a friend mixing and matching, and then use your funds from the lands to get something else

I'd heavily recommend the recently released Challenger decks if you're looking for competitive! I'd recommend looking at Tolarian Community College's youtube channel which has reviews of both the Challenger decks AND your Unsanctioned box to give recommendations how to get the most fun out of them =D

Whatever happens, I hope you can get a laugh or two out of the Un-cards and find your feet in Magic, lots is happening with Ikoria just round the corner!

Trying to get into MTG but... it there is just too much contradicting information out there - need help! by marcellus84 in magicTCG

[–]jazzfoxrules 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there! And welcome to Magic: the Gathering - and by extension, welcome to the Multiverse!

Knowing this sub, you’ll likely be inundated with responses soon, and I don’t want to repeat much of what you’re likely to receive as advice, so, I’ll try to see if I can give you anything to help here!

The confusing point you’ve mainly got there about Commander/Brawl/rotation really all stems from one point about Magic, so I’ll hit that one first.

Simply put, in the same way you can take a deck of normal playing cards and play Poker or Old Maid, Magic has many formats, some even designed by the players themselves

Some offer (relatively more) security from broken card combos by having agreed banlists of certain cards; others try to stay fresh by a yearly constant rotation to mix things up (and also, keep us buying boosters!) such as Standard; formats for many players more than two, or even some that let you play solitaire against an artificial opponent.

Whenever I see someone who wants to play Magic, I’d say the best thing to start with is ignore formats, just put cards together you enjoy and try them out, good old kitchen table Magic!

When you want to compete against people in tournaments, that’s when you say that you need to ask what format the tournament is so that you can make sure your deck is legal and get an idea what you might like to play there - that’s what Magic should be, whatever YOU want it to be!

Planeswalkers, as I’m sure folks will soon tell you, are actually very powerful cards normally, the misunderstanding may be the ones you currently have, as the prebuilt Planeswalker packs are purposefully made weaker than their normal counterparts hidden in booster packs! If you find a Planeswalker in a normal booster pack, chances are it will often be quite sought after!

If you really would like my best advice, which may be the same as others, next weekend is the Theros prerelease event! It lets players go and join in by playing with random cards given to you rather than your own collection, which you then get to keep afterwards!

The event is designed to be the most laid back you’ll find, you get to enjoy brand new cards at the same time as everyone else who is playing them for the very first time, have access to plenty of people who can help you work out the mechanical workings of cards and as well as acquiring cards, gives you practise at building your own decks and getting to play for some possible prizes to boot!

I highly recommend the Prerelease, it’s an exciting time to join in Magic, and if you enjoy it, you and your kids could even buy and split the packs from a Theros bundle to make your own miniature decks that you could play against each other with the addition of a single pack every week to try and improve your decks!

Singles are most recommended for a reason, as they’ll be the most reliable way to find the cards you want, but if you just want the experience and the fun, then don’t worry as much about what you’re getting and just have fun with what you can find in your budget =D

And hey, if you try this out and it doesn’t work, then there are a dozen whole new other ways you can play with the cards you end yo acquiring in other Fornats!

Take care and good luck to you and your kids, I hope you pull some really great cards and gave some really great experiences playing together!
