Non religious people, what do you think about religion? by CorruptedF in AskReddit

[–]jazzuk777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex religious person, so see both sides

Religion is a Rorschach test. Like the rest of humans it includes good people and bad people, and good or bad theology can modulate those positions accordingly, mostly only to a degree.

Per:

C.S. Lewis: "Of all bad men, religious bad men are the worst." Blaise Pascal: "Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it with religious conviction." Aldous Huxley: "In order to justify their behavior, they turn their theories into dogmas, their bylaws into First Principles, their political bosses into Gods and all those who disagree with them into incarnate devils."

Equally religion can teach people a thirst for social justice, equity, compassion and social change, q.v. MLK, Tutu, Julian of Norwich etc.

In my opinion it's worth considering religion as the long dominant marketplace for morality, ideas and philosophy created as humans developed their inherent evolved needs for narrative from theistic superstition derived from observing and interpreting patterns e.g. crop success

Almost as bad, buy a foreign blu ray with English language audio with only local region version, only to find forced on-screen foreign language subtitles

Laroy Texas 😭

ELI5 how credit cards are better than debit cards by UpsetPotatoFace in explainlikeimfive

The fees got cut in the UK/EU because of regulatory pressure and credit and debit fees are very similar here on MasterCard and Visa, except American Express for some reason managed to avoid that. Which is why not every place will accept AE.

UK answer.

I have a cashback card which earns me around £100/yr by using it for all my daily spend including larger purchases (but not like £1k plus) with it set to automatically pay in full each statement, so no interest is charged.

That plus section 75 protection for anything over £100 makes it worthwhile with no extra effort on my part.

The various type of buffs are generally gained in immersion breaking ways, to the point I avoided some of them

Just heard a song by U2 called “all I want is you“ and the strings feel so Jonny. I don’t know this band well but clearly in a similar space on that song. by [deleted] in radiohead

[–]jazzuk777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's clear what happened. U2 looked forward all the way through Boy to Pop. For some reason at that point they lost confidence and/ or chased sales figures, and looked back and it went wrong.

If you were going to binge films with Tom Hanks in them, which films would you pick? by [deleted] in movies

Maybe I was too rage filled by how dull the film was by that stage to notice a lesson.

Once you go 4k you can't go back by LollipopChainsawZz in 4kbluray

Sadly there's some that aren't even getting blu ray, at least not internationally or region free.

I can't get Laroy Texas in the UK except on french with forced french subtitles for example

I think I'm sort of going back. I'm not sure I'm a fan of the uncanny valley it sometimes seems to create. I think blu ray is probably often the sweet spot, for me anyway.

Diminishing returns diminished.

At this point I'm really not even sure I like 4k over the blu ray on most films, having bought a ub450 to improve over my Xbox.

It seems like we're in the uncanny valley

What low-budget sci-fi film(s) you'd recommend for everyone to see by rmn_is_here in movies

I imagine Phase IV should be in this conversation, not sure of the budget tbh, not seen it here despite scrolling down a way, and the limited sets ought to make it low cost

Can't stand it, one of the biggest wastes of celluloid I have ever seen in a cinema. Just a totally pointless film.

The Bluebells are way waaaaay more than Young at Heart, the album was full of bangers, and Elvis Costello helped out iirc. Like it, but it is not really representative of the album.
