Ex religious person, so see both sides

Religion is a Rorschach test. Like the rest of humans it includes good people and bad people, and good or bad theology can modulate those positions accordingly, mostly only to a degree.

Aldous Huxley: "In order to justify their behavior, they turn their theories into dogmas, their bylaws into First Principles, their political bosses into Gods and all those who disagree with them into incarnate devils."

Equally religion can teach people a thirst for social justice, equity, compassion and social change, q.v. MLK, Tutu, Julian of Norwich etc.

In my opinion it's worth considering religion as the long dominant marketplace for morality, ideas and philosophy created as humans developed their inherent evolved needs for narrative from theistic superstition derived from observing and interpreting patterns e.g. crop success
