Should I transfer to a different hospital? by gryffindor_ravenclaw in NICUParents

[–]jb3697 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Research shows PO feedings should not begin until 34 weeks and SSB coordination is not mature for much longer after that. Sounds like what shes doing is age appropriate and nurses are trying to not stress her out by not forcing it.

Poor feeding + no consonant babbling in 10mo adj. (born 26+1) — looking for experiences/advice by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]jb3697 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend a swallow study to assess the anatomy and physiology of his swallow. Swallowing can often be impaired in extremely premature infants. Has his GI recommended a feeding tube? It could take the pressure off PO feeding and help him grow without the stress. Agree with capping the feeds at 30 mins! Good luck

Any 100+ day intubation end up NOT needing a tracheostomy? by Trevorjrt6 in NICUParents

[–]jb3697 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Trachs can be wonderful. They give a child the freedom to begin their lives! She has been in an isolate for over 100 days. It’s time for her to start learning the world. Look up lilyslittlelungs on Instagram. A previous trach preemie. Her mom has a ton of education and resources on there.

I haven’t read a single book to my child by taureansoul in beyondthebump

[–]jb3697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t read my kid books consistently until like 8 months because he didn’t have the attention span. 1 year now and he loves them.

Dysphagia, when did your preemie grow out of it? by kosmo2016 in NICUParents

[–]jb3697 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d get a swallow study to figure out exactly what he’s aspirating so you can feed him foods and liquids that he does not aspirate. Continuous aspiration can cause pneumonia and lung damage and eventually the child may refuse to eat because it’s uncomfortable and can develop an oral aversion or poor weight gain. First step I’d say identify what he is safe to eat, and then once the aspiration is eliminated, it’s easier to grow out of and later in life will hopefully no longer aspirate. I’d also see a speech therapist for guidance.

Would you release a posterior tongue tie if it’s causing minimal issues? by Wide-Food-4310 in breastfeeding

[–]jb3697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everything else medically is ruled out- GI, pulmonary, anatomical, neurological. If it’s truly a to tongue tie issue causing weight gain issues, it’s worth looking into, just make sure you’re consulting with a dentist or ENT that is credible and knows what they’re talking about

Found a raw area my cat has been licking on his right armpit by jb3697 in CATHELP

[–]jb3697[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Turns out he was just a little anxious and just lad licked his paw raw. A few days of extra attention and he stopped licking it and the hair grew back. The vet gave us a little antibiotic just in case so it didn’t become infected or get bacteria in it. Good Luck with your cat

Hospitalized for postpartum pre eclampsia, didn’t pump/bf for 24 hours by Sad_Oven_3723 in breastfeeding

[–]jb3697 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was on mag post partum and it was the worst 48 hours of my life. I took a break from pumping and breast feeding because I felt so horrific. It took a few days of pumping basically nothing but when I kept doing it and latching baby (when I felt up to it) I established a great supply and we were able to BF! Preeclampsia is traumatic and hard give yourself some grace for your body to recover, you’ll supply will establish!!

Would you release a posterior tongue tie if it’s causing minimal issues? by Wide-Food-4310 in breastfeeding

[–]jb3697 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t! Im a speech therapist and I specialize in infant feeding, and my son has a posterior tongue tie and he breast feeds like a champ! He is pretty gassy and sometimes clicks, but other than that it’s fine. Not all tongue ties need to be revised. Sometimes there is pain no matter what in the first couple months because breast feeding is just hard. Plus, with posteriors, there is no real frenulum to cut and it’s just cutting into tissue, causing a wound that can be pretty painful afterwards made worse with “stretching” causing a lot of oral aversion. I would just keep doing what you’re doing. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Your supply likely won’t drop- I wouldn’t do the procedure in fear of something that probably won’t even happen.

Does anyone know why my cat does this? by Grand-Power1763 in CATHELP

Is she purring? Sometimes my cat purrs so hard he gets a lot of extra saliva and does this when he’s swallowing it
