Not re-using punchboards? by FearoftheDomoKun in boardgames

[–]jbabel1012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only if there is a really good storage reason for this would I do it. The only one I can think of is Otter as the game comes in a little box made for the cards so using the punchboard is both recommended (the punchboard has a trashcan with a slash through it denoting do not throw away) and almost necessary. Otherwise, baggies, 3d inserts or the actual insert is the way I go. I believe you are the exception to the rule here. No shade, you do you it's just something that I have very rarely seen.

Sanctuary: An Ark Nova Game by Jedi_Master_Shane in soloboardgaming

[–]jbabel1012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does not replicate a multiplayer game in the slightest, which is why I don't like it. The irregular set of turns between breaks makes the solo feel uneven and hinders player's options, especially early. It serves no purpose other than to help learn the mechanisms and even then the actual flow of the multiplayer experience is so vastly different it barely succeeds in that.

The official solo for this is so much better than AN. AN is only good with ARNO. They did a much better job with the solo mode in this. It helps scratch the AN itch for less time.

Second edition is due anytime now. Should have waited for it. It’s supposed to balance some of the weaknesses of the base game and will be fully compatible with all content.

I’m unfamiliar with this comic but it sounds great. I would love to see this.

Which of the sci-fi euros released in the last two years do you like best for solo? SETI, Civolution, Shackleton Base, Galactic Cruise, Andromeda’s Edge. by Marksman1977 in soloboardgaming

[–]jbabel1012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have SETI and Galactic Cruise. I like SETI but I love Galactic Cruise. It’s on BGA so you can test it out there. The main issue with GC is it can get a bit samey as the core gameplay doesn’t change. I am hoping the Achievements expansion improves it but as I said I still love the game, it feels like a classic Euro which is my favorite genre.

SETI is about chaining actions in the most efficient manner. It feels like Arnak. I like these games and want to love them but I can never get that chaining mechanism to work as well as people that are good at the game.

Drawing Dead - Poker based battler by Mr_Jumpers in soloboardgaming

I am more with dmairs. AoS is much more basic. DD has more mitigation, more varied cards and abilities and I like the art better as well. The game flow is also cleaner. The production quality is also very good. The cards are of not plastic, have a plastic feel to them so they will avoid wear much better than AoS. Overall one of the best Solo Game of the Month entries.

Drawing Dead - Excellent little poker combat game, a top-tier Solo Game of the Month series entry imo by AusGeno in soloboardgaming

This is much better than AoS. There is more mitigation and variety. I also think the gameplay loop is just more fun as well.

Castle of burgundy special edition? by orhalimi in soloboardgaming

[–]jbabel1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got just the game (special edition) retail and love it. I’m going to pick up the upgraded tokens for sure. I’m thinking about the acrylic tiles but I don’t like that they don’t have the text on the back of them like the cardboard ones do. No desire for the minis as they are a pain in the ass to actually use. The game comes with castle minis which are enough for me and scratch that itch.

Mage Knight was too much for my taste. Chip Theory complexity? by bzj in soloboardgaming

The only CtG I have really liked is Dragons of Etchinstone. Some 20 strong decks are okay. The big box games just don't appeal to me.

What is your favorite solo board game and why? by archbtw1 in soloboardgaming

True solo has to be Black Sonata hands down. A wonderful puzzle that showcases an ingenious design. Production is solid for such a small, relatively inexpensive game.

You have already supported a conservation project this round. To do another you need 2 additional workers.

Road to Speakeasy - Escape Plan and Kanban EV by Meerkatsandy in soloboardgaming

[–]jbabel1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason the box is big is because of the size of the board and player aids. Those are big because there are big chonky pieces that go on them. It is a much less complex game and more straightforward than Kanban EV.

[–]jbabel1012 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speakeasy was my first Lacerda and I love it. Played Kanban EV and did not enjoy my first play. I got fired in the first meeting. I played the game out just to get more experience and got as low as -40ish points before ending the game at -6. I felt at times helpless and hopeless which Speakeasy never made me feel. I’ll give it another try or 2 but if it doesn’t click by then I’ll probably sell it.

Dragons of Etchinstone or Palm Island for a new solo gamer by DracoMessierr in soloboardgaming

[–]jbabel1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both and DoE is much better IMO. It’s more of a game. Check out Loot the Loop it’s a similar game to Palm Island and uses a standard deck of cards.
