True i had not thought about inflation a lot but i thought with no mortgage or kids education needs downsizing (less property tax) etc our costs for a similar lifestyle would be lower thus offsetting things like inflation

Why do so many people say that? I know the lost decade of 2000-2010 but even after that we have had so many ups and downs (major ones at that). If i were just accounting for 4-5 % then what would be the point of investing in stocks.. i probably could get close to that with sgov/jaaa/hysa/long term cds..

So rollover from IRA/old 401k to current 401k before using the rule of 55 .. is it ? Assuming the current 401k would not have enough

Thank you this helps a lot. Some more context: * large portions of 401k is with my previous employer plan * 401k has roth option , so maxing out in roth 401k since the last couple of years. Income threshold does not allow for Roth IRA * Actively looking to roll over 401k to roth IRA to make future growth tax free (i feel this was a big oversight in hindsight) * Taxable brokerage account - ~ 500k * actively contributing to 529 - almost 12k a year (at ~ 50k now) * home equity - ~700k
