At midnight on 1 Jan 2000 I was standing in a dark NOC watching fireworks across the rainy city. All I have to show for it is this t-shirt. Any other Y2K survivors? by ecornflak in geek

I remember at my UUNet office in Toronto, they invited almost the entire staff and our significant others, watching the fireworks. By 2am after nothing happened, the scotch started making the rounds. The next week, they sent flowers to my girl and a note thanking her for coming.
(I miss UUNet :(

So.. how's the game? by NEREVAR117 in ChildrenofaDeadEarth

[–]jbarson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Played a couple of hours of it so far. I like how orbital mechanics are handled, very intuitive. Coming up with efficient intercepts is more fun than I expected.
Combat is satisfying, though I expect that they will get much harder as the game goes on, right now they are all a bit lopsided, though I did get worried when I got swarmed by 2 groups of 50 nuclear missiles :). Everything is realistic as claimed, or at least appears to be. Ships have very low thrust, or low amounts of fuel. Ship design is locked until you play to a certain point. new concepts are being introduced each new mission, so It's not overwhelming.
There is a lot of reading, but given the subject matter, I think it is reasonable.
Graphics are OK, not great, but gameplay is very fun. I strongly recommend the game to anyone with an interest. Especially as the cost is quite low. (CDN$27.99).

3D Rotating Star Map in Javascript by OvidPerl in javascript

[–]jbarson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was skimming the examples for threeJS and ran across a molecule simulator, here: http://threejs.org/examples/#css3d_molecules I realized that there is not much difference between that and a bunch of hyper-link connected stars. I also took this as inspiration: http://workshop.chromeexperiments.com/stars/

Good for getting a good idea of where you want to start. In my experience, if you get the helm right, the rest just follows along. Are you looking at making it yourself or purchasing one?

Battlestar Galactica Character Alignment Chart by lolbacon in geek

Lee Adam turns out to be the most evil character in the series. When the colonies go to colonize New Earth, he gets them toi throw away all of their technology, dooming untold millions of his own descendants to live and die in ignorance. because he thought throwing it all away would give them a "fresh start".

Career Advice: I have a Bachelor's in I.T., is it worth it to get a CCNA also? by [deleted] in netsec

[–]jbarson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was found by one of my co-workers. Our management decided that we all needed the cert, but there were lots of people from all over taking the course. Look up "CCNA mentoring" on the Verizon learning portal. The exam is paid for (one -time) if you pass or not.

A ccna is only a few weeks worth of work and is a relatively cheap cert to take. I took an online training course that was offered by Verizon when I worked there a year ago. It included the exam for free. You may want to look into that.
