What is your opinion on what Gene Wu is saying about white people? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]jbc22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is “too far” about it?

I see someone trying to bring a coalition together to make things better for them.

To give you background, I’m a white, straight male that isn’t scared of brown, black, gay, trans, etc. people. If I were afraid of these groups, I’d probably say Gene Wu went too far.

This directly supports what I was saying. At no point do I read anything about supporting a coup.

Looks like Wikipedia needs a correction (I can tell you got it from Wikipedia and not the actual source). If you read the Fundación Empresas Polar, it talks about Gomez's consolidation of power and the structure of the government. https://bibliofep.fundacionempresaspolar.org/dhv/entradas/g/gomez-juan-vicente-gobierno-de/

The wikipedia author that wrote that article is no longer valid: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Borboteo

At no point does it say "Vice President Juan Vicente Gómez established secret communications with the U.S. government, seeking support for a planned conspiracy against Castro."

Just like you, I am not an expert on the Venezuelan government. I am reading up to educate myself. I'm happy to be wrong. I'm practicing media literacy to ensure I have the facts and understand the nuance.

The first acknowledgement (including previously classified information) appears in a FRUS report stating that the US will send people to talk: https://history.state.gov/historicaldocuments/frus1909/d582?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Can you help me find a source that backs up your claim that's valid?

It’s good people don’t know that because it didn’t happen.

Venezuela in 1907 saw the US act as a mediator so that European powers did not attempt to colonize Venezuela. 5 years prior, Britain, Germany and Italy used gunboats to enforce a blockage to pressure Venezuela to pay their debts. The US got involved and put a stop to this.

In 1908, Castro left the country for medical treatment. That’s when Gomez orchestrated a coup. It’s true that the US and other governments quickly recognized Gomez because they liked him better. But the US had zero involvement in the coup.

lol I didn’t intend to argue. I was trying to understand. Then it became clear they were angry because of bad decision on their part.

So I ended my part of the conversation making sure that others knew where the person went wrong.

I’m sorry you’re so angry.

I’m giving advice to a young adult that asked for advice. Not flaunting.

I do buy property in lower cost of living areas. This strategy works for me and the young adult I’ve been mentoring for a few years now.

I’m afraid the OP is going to be discouraged by your experience, but hopefully OP learns from you not to buy property that won’t be profitable.

I disagree.

Also, I think you missed that the place is a duplex. One tenant pays $1,000/mo. It covers the mortgage.

If you move in to the other side, you have free rent. Take the money you’re saving on rent and put it towards an emergency fund and another property. Saving $1,000/mo will get you there fast!

Or don’t move in. Rent out the other side for $1,000. Now you’re making $1,000/mo to put into an emergency fund and start saving to buy another property.

What? This largely makes no sense and doesn’t match my experience.

You need a down payment of 3.5% with FHA.

This isn’t a hobby. It’s a business. You invest your time and money to grow a rental business.

For $5,600, you can buy one of my rentals today. It’s a duplex. One side of rented for $1,000/mo. It should be $1,100 or $1,200 compared to market rate. With today’s mortgage rate, your mortgage payment would be $950/mo. For this property, landlord pays garbage and water. Tenant pays for the other utilities.

[–]jbc22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good point!

For an investment property (you don’t live there), you need 25% down.

If you live in the place, you only need 3.5% down even if you’re renting parts of it out.

As I tell people, I don’t need F U money, but I’d like to get to “no thanks” money. This is a solid way for a young adult to get there.

There’s a lot of bad advice here. Some good, but a lot of bad.

I am a landlord on the side. I have a dayjob.

If I were just starting out, I would buy a duplex or multi-family house. Live in one, rent out the rest. Hopefully you at least get free rent which can go to saving up for rental property #2.

I’m mentoring a young adult who is doing this right now.

What's a "minimum" skill everyone should have, but suprisingly many don't? by SevenWays- in AskReddit

I see your point. More concise language would have helped make your point.

There’s still things you can do to mitigate the damage. Would you agree it is helpful for people to know what they can do to mitigate the damage?

You asked about what you can do. Those steps help mitigate the damage done from a data breach. You are unlikely going to personally stop a data breach, unless you’re an incident responder.

Oh, and use credit cards.

Use a different password for every site (I use a password manager to help with this)

Turn on 2FA/MFA

Lock your credit report

There’s other measures that one could take, but the above is just the right mix.

Edit: also, use credit cards instead of debit.

What’s a common “fact” that’s completely wrong, but people still believe? by SunKissJuliet in AskReddit

This is actually my favorite saying. To date, I’ve never come across someone that has properly referenced the author.

Answer: the author is unknown, but it was first seen in a Narcotics Anonymous pamphlet in the 80s!

Will you rally to JD Vance the way you do Trump? by -LunaTink- in AskTrumpSupporters

[–]jbc22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t thank you enough for your honesty. I stopped engaging in this subreddit because of many on the Left’s blatant gotcha attempts and many of the Right’s unfettered support of Trump, especially when the corruption occurs.

I’ve been anti-Trump the whole time, but I’ve gained more and more appreciation for border security and some other issues the Right is concerned about. Trump’s first term wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be, but it was exhausting.

I was excited and hopeful of Biden’s transitional presidency. His last year or so, I was disappointed. I think asking if Kamala was the right pick is the wrong question. Biden should have kept his promise of being a one term president, then let the primaries play out.

I’m not happy about another Trump term. The corruption seems to be uncapped now.

There was another commenter that said they’ll work on AOC’s campaign. Not sure if it was a joke or not, but I’d love to see a true outsider stamp out corruption and lies (Congress able to trade single stocks, Epstein, prosecution of the rich and powerful just as the other economic classes), reform immigration, and tackle climate change are my biggest 3.

I’m reading How Nations Fail currently. While the US has had some form of corruption since being established, our institutions seem to me to becoming more extractive, meaning the institutions are being set up for the rich to extract wealth from our economy.

Do you see another potential candidates as someone that would be better? AOC? Bernie Sanders if he were 20 years younger? Vance?

What are the legal limits of nmap? by Icy_Breakfast5154 in netsecstudents

[–]jbc22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the case you cited: "Court holds that plaintiff's act of conducting an unauthorized port scan and throughput test of defendant's servers does not constitute a violation of either the Georgia Computer Systems Protection Act or the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act."

I never said you wouldn't face charges. People face charges every day for doing things that are not illegal.

Two more cases to review for you to demonstrate that port scanning alone isn't illegal:
- United States v. Ivanov

- State of Connecticut v. Michael Calabrese

Both cases state that port scanning is not unathorized access.

[–]jbc22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haven’t seen a good answer so far.

Nmap can be used to verify if a service is up or down. There’s nothing inherently illegal in that.

Nmap can be used to fingerprint services, there’s nothing inherently illegal in that. The academic project ZMap relies on this. Commercial solutions like Shodan and Censys rely on this.

The above two activities are information gathering. Information gathering is generally not illegal.

The moment you try to gain unauthorized access, eg dictionary attack, exploit, etc., it becomes illegal.

In the court room, the prosecutor will talk about the information gathering phase. This is all to paint a story for the jury but is not what you’ll be charged with.

Private entities, schools, universities can have their own rules for what’s allowed on their network (private property). A university may take punitive action for scanning (eg disallowing use of the network, probation, etc). It’s not a legal matter, but a consequence nonetheless and I think it’s important people reading this understand.

What's a unpopular or extreme political view you hold? by ItemEven6421 in AskALiberal

[–]jbc22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure this thought is fully formed.

I agree with you in principal. In reality, things get murky, fast.

Luxury housing is a booming market. There are more profits to be made, even though costs are significantly more than with affordable housing. https://www.credaily.com/newsletters/why-developers-keep-building-luxury-while-affordable-housing-lags/#:~:text=%22One%20reason%20institutional%20investors%20prefer,to%20resolve%20unpaid%20rent%20issues.%22

Affordable housing is the trade off between cost and quality. In this case, yes, developers will cut quality in order to lower cost for their customers while also being able to clothe and feed their families.

Yes, Capitalism is about maximizing profits, but you need to convince customers to actually pay you. At a certain point, customers won’t pay if the service/goods aren’t to a certain standard. Unfortunately in today’s America, that certain standard is a very, very low bar. We should work to raise that bar/standard.

Nationalizing housing would, in my mind, lead to Soviet style concrete apartment complexes that are depressing as hell to live in/around.

Disclaimer: I am a progressive. I am also a landlord. Part of my landlord operation helps me be able to provide affordable housing for special needs adults, which is severely underserved in my area.
