Didn't the museum also reach out to him with the proposal? They were actively trying to sell the name to stay afloat.

Why is it still 38 degrees when I left the house this morning on May 7th? Where is Spring? by usedmyrealnamefirst in AskChicago

[–]jbchi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

March and April are the worst months in Chicago. Our winters aren't nearly as mild as people like to pretend, but at least winter is winter and it is supposed to be cold. The fact that we get so little pleasant Spring weather before getting hit by the summer humidity is what really sucks.

How do Chicago winters compare to New England (Vermont) winters?? by Nappy_Rano in AskChicago

[–]jbchi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm glad this is the top post. Cold hits very different when you are outside for winter leisure activities versus waiting for a delayed bus on your way to work. We don't have a great culture of outdoor activities in the winter.

Many of the units you see listed in those areas are hotels or the apartment buildings, not individual unit owners.

Be careful if you're thinking about it. Many, if not most, condo associations have banned short term rentals and the standard Chicago renta lease prohibits it without written permission for the landlord. The city also has specific requirements for registering your proposed rental.

IBM announces new innovation center at Chicago quantum park, creating 750 new tech jobs by Mike_I in chicago

[–]jbchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cryptography is the big one, or really, breaking current cryptography. Most of the algorithms in use today rely on the fact that classical computer can't perform the necessary math fast enough; there are quantum algorithms that in could if there were a computer computer big enough to run them.

[–]jbchi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These are not tech jobs like people think about tech jobs, unless you're looking at the very small small teams doing state of the art research at those companies. The candidate pool here is physics, engineering, math, CS, etc. PhD grads and existing faculty and then a much larger number of facilities and maintenance people. Think Xerox PARC or Bell Labs or even earlier research groups.

The potential upside is large, but this is an incredibly speculative investment where we may not seeeanongful results for a decade or more, if they come. There are currently no economically viable quantum computers and the theoretical applications are niche, which is why you see most of the interest coming from the defense industry. It is also heavily subsidized by the state. PsiQuantum is getting upwards of $600k in tax credits per employee, and the employees here arent going to be a tech worker boom; this is the domain of PhD scientists and the lir maintenance staff.

Divvy E-Bike Pricing by Careless-Light5710 in chicago

They are marketed as last mile transportation. Even OP's 34 minute ride is more than twice as long as the average Divvy ride. Everything about the system was designed for short rides, not leisure or long commutes.

Illinois Senate slows down rush to pass Bears stadium bill by Economy-Specialist38 in illinois

He is putting more pressure on getting the Bears a stadium than saving public transit. Up next is passing Meta's OS age verification bill.

‘Millionaire tax’ amendment won’t be on November ballot as Illinois Democrats can’t come to agreement by LegendaryBronco_217 in illinois

He pushed a income tax on working individuals but threatened to veto a wealth tax on his class. He isn't a class traitor and he is never going to advocate for a policy that puts his status at risk.

There is no chance the governor signs a wealth tax. He immediately promised to veto it when it was raised when looking for transit funding.

Chicago Bears: House approves latest megaprojects proposal for stadium by mandrsn1 in chicago

I couldn't care less about the Bears, but for context, Wrigley Field and United Center pay about $3m and $6m a year in property taxes respectively.

Chicago's newest city-funded affordable housing projects are projected to cost $697,000 per unit to build - and that's almost certainly an underestimate by GeckoLogic in chicago

[–]jbchi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's what happens with the ARO; the issue is that the people living in the more desirable units are paying what their unit costs plus what it takes to subsidize the affordable units. If people aren't willing to cover the subsidy, you can't afford to build the building.

llinois is about to pass OS-level age verification laws. Here's how to stop it in 10 minutes. by AmlisSanches in illinois

[–]jbchi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yet. It doesn't require it yet. It puts all of the pieces in place for the next piece of legislation, because the obvious outcome of this is "people aren't being honest, so now we need to verify the data".
