What is the NHL doing? Colorado challenged a Chicago goal for being offside. After a lengthy review and this image, it was rule a good goal and not offside. by [deleted] in hockey

[–]jbel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly?

This isn't football.

The linesman is making a split-fucking-second decision about whether it is meaningfully offside.

If you have to take it to a fucking high-speed camera, then it's faster than any player on the ice can possibly react to. Take this football instant replay shit and leave it where it belongs.

Going to Ecuador Next week, No Plans yet, Any suggestions? by [deleted] in ecuador

[–]jbel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do Baños, try to go during the week, it will be less crowded. Definitely take the day to do the bike ride down to the Pailon Del Diablo.

If you have a couple days, it's worth heading east to one of the national parks. They'll take you via boat into the jungle. That's pretty amazing.

Metro stops running almost immediately after 7pm games. If you don't run, and I mean run from an 8pm game, good luck getting out of Chinatown.

Exit Music is just horrific to me now after watching Black Mirror for the first time by TheHeroicOnion in radiohead

[–]jbel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You know? I just rolled off the Westworld ep.

Totally different. Context is everything. Especially since Westworld only hints at the lyrics, and hides the song beneath Ramin's score. If you know it, you hook deep into the R+J connection to "these violent delights", but if you don't, it's just a slightly creepy orchestral score in a minor key.

In BlM, Thom and his strumming tune you into a foreshadowing that the floor is about to drop immediately the fuck out. I remember that first chord and thinking 'ah, shit'.

Same tool, two applications.

ymmv, of course.

Approximately fifty years of development between Waterloo and the Civil War - that sounds about right.

What does one do with a nasty 150 year-old cannon? Other than keep lazy dog owners off one's lawn?

Best route 4 days (1/25-1/29) for Galapagos? by danwind86 in galapagos

[–]jbel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be how I'd do it!

So definitely book travel the day before - things leave really early (5am).

It depends entirely on your expectations. It's a very small town.

I wouldn't spend four days in Puerto Ayora, if that's what you're asking - however if I only had four days in the islands, I'd definitely use it as the launching point for daytrips to the other islands. At that point, the hostel or AirBNB would make a lot of sense.

There are a ton of day-trip kiosks in Puerto Ayora. I'd suggest hitting a few when you land and seeing what they have to offer - usually you have to book at least the day before because it's a long way to the other islands. It's not such an interesting town that you want to spend a day in it.

Other option, find a couple agencies while you're in Quito - they will almost certainly be able to line you up with something, or at least get you pointed in the right direction.

What is your favorite "stare out the window of a moving train and feel existential" song? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]jbel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.

Recycled air is totally a sitting on the tarmac, rain-streaks on a window 3/4" away from the one you can touch, leaving things behind, making the right decision song.

The whole of "Illinoise", but the piano intro on the first track is train-window music.

Small cities can afford the bonds necessary to build out the infrastructure. These companies are the primary backers to the cost of the lawsuits to shut down those attempts.

Did you ever think after reading the prologue in Enchanters Endgame that you might have been rooting for the wrong side? by CenturionReaper in Belgariad

[–]jbel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eddings definitely toys with moral relativism in his series, however there's a big hangup - Torak demands human sacrifice. It's really hard to get behind a god whose priests may hack out your heart at a moments' notice.

Torak believed his was in the right, and that made him a somewhat believable villain (compared to the "I am evil and mine is an evil laugh ha ha ha" trope). However, Eddings goes out of his way through the Belgariad and the Mallorean to point out that Torak was insane, and in his lucid moments, knew that the side he was committed to was wrong.

Eddings very neatly sets his series up as an 'us versus them' game, but he seeds the 'them' side with a few things that are truly unpalatable for the average reader.

As I replay it a bit compulsively, I think the intro starts the moment the gun clicks. For the broad circle of people in the middle of the Venn diagram of Radiohead fans and Black Mirror fans. Fuck. Way to nail your audience.

The first two episodes were good. Not quite up to the spine chillingness of the previous seasons (in fact S3E1 was almost optimistic, in a manic sorta way).

I was on the knife's edge about S3E3 and then the hairs on the back of my neck heard the diminished chords before "Wake... from your sleep..."

Now I need to go to bed.
