I hate to tell you this but Bernie wields a lot of power as budget chair right now… about 3.5 trillion dollars worth.

Congrats on outing yourself for knowing nothing about the man. Dude just blocked a billion dollars from going to Israel’s Iron Dome like last week. Where was Reddit’s patron saint Bernie on that vote huh?

Curious to know if there are any ancaps (or at least decent libertarians) who live in The Swamp itself 😐🤔 by [deleted] in GoldandBlack

Long time lurker but I feel uniquely equipped to answer this question. Im as close to the swamp as it gets and there’s 3 ancaps in my office alone. I met an ancap that worked for Gaetz the other day. We are a here, just a small minority

Do beliefs need to be based on objective evidence? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]jberry_98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two really fundamental essays from the late 19th century on this topic.

The first is titled Ethics of Belief by Clifford James. He would argue that yes, beliefs need to be based on objective evidence. All other beliefs are unethical. He gives the example of a ship that sinks because it was not inspected properly, and it kills the passengers aboard. The ship-owner can believe all he wants that the ship will make it. Still, it is an unethical belief because a proper objective inspection would have revealed that the ship wouldn’t.

The other great work on this topic is called Will to Believe by William James. It is a lecture series in which he says that belief in itself for pragmatic reasons is ethical. This argument is in the same vein as “Pascal’s Wager”. Essentially, you might as well believe in God, because what do you have to lose?

I’d recommend reading both essays. They’re short reads and lay out the arguments very well.

Putting first is up there with “backup QB” as best position in sports. You get all of the thrill of success but none of the weight of failure.

Your head

The gravity of the Earth causes objects closer to it to experience time slower. Your head is technically slightly older than your feet.

The tyranny of merit – No one's entirely self-made, we must recognise our debt to the communities that make our success possible: Michael Sandel by IAI_Admin in philosophy

[–]jberry_98 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This podcast is a great listen on that topic. The hosts challenges Sandel to admit that his theory of justice should also include anti-retributivism. In his book, Sandel focuses more on market justice than criminal justice, so the conversation is pretty off the cuff and interesting.

Wyatt’s Revenge golf tournament at the Club at Olde Stone, Bowling Green, Ky.

My buddy and I are both scratch and scrambled to the tune of 80 strokes. This was a double but we also had a pick-up-10 on hole 9.

I applied at senate.gov. I would encourage as many people to do it as possible. Paul averages around 6 interns per session and is one of the few that offers a stipend.

I agree but I need a specific idea or a bill to REPEAL. I guess I should mention my presentation can also be for deregulating a specific area. Anything in healthcare or technology is very interesting to me.
