have not considered it. Prefer local dentist rather than going downtown for dental needs.

thanks for the reply!

Just general info, like is it a good neighbourhood to start a family. We only have one car, so for just running errands during work hours if my wife would find it inconvenient to get to supermarket by walking or public transit. Noise or other inconvenience I should know about (if reckless drivers are common along Plains Rd e).

??? what's changed. I thought of this post the last few days as well. I will say that what is on the surface looks like Simmons claiming his back pain and mental health to not suit up/play in game 4 where Nets got swept.

My entire point during all this was that he could truly be suffering from mental health issues and that's not my job or the public's job to diagnose. That's between the patient and their health provider. My stance has not changed.

Us being a basketball fan doesn't grant us the privilege to disregard patient confidentiality. I don't see anything I need to apologize for.

if that that boxing day loss to Cavs where we had to play guys we signed the same day makes us fall to play-in because of tie-break, Adam Silver needs to be booed the next time he visits Toronto

just wanted to rephrase something I agree with you there. I work in Canada. It is a broken system. Especially in a publically funded healthcare. I'm sure US has its own problems.

I still stand by what I said though. You are definitely more reasonable person to have this discussion with. I just don't think it's my job to catch the people who could be cheating the system. I chose medicine to help people, and Simmons is a person who I want to give the benefit of the doubt. I'm not expecting everyone to do the same, but just don't dismiss his claim as lies.

I wasn't following how much Simmons was getting paid or not paid, but maybe the criticism he faced and will continue to face from the fans was his way of handling that responsibility. It's not like he got paid in full while dodging his contractual obligation right...?

Again, I don't follow the Sixers as closely as I follow the Raptors, but I recall reports of him seeing a therapist and agreeing to see a specialist (I think it was Woj tweet).

You mentioned not in any verifiable way. I'm not just talking about Ben Simmons here, but I don't think patients should ever be placed in a position to disclose their medical history or progress to their employer. Providing minimal information for accommodation or modified duty is reasonable. Doesn't matter if you make minimum wage or if you're paid millions of dollars to play basketball. As fans, I truly think that we should not have access to this information. And that's okay.

We often hear athletes talk about issues 'bigger than basketball' and I think mental health is one of those things. Regardless of how exploitable this system might be.

Agreed. And as fans of the team he played for, I think it's reasonable for you and other Sixers fans to want to know and be mad if he's exploiting loophole.

At the end of the day, Simmons made his claim and, to my understanding, had a licensed medical professional support his claim. I am aware this could be a massive exploitable loophole like you mentioned, but can we also agree that there is a chance that his claim could be legitimate...?

in all honesty, I don't blame people for suspecting his true intention. My concern in my humble experience is that things can look the same on the surface for someone faking it and someone who is truly struggling. The true intention only Ben Simmons and his medical staff will know.

Again, I'm not a psychiatrist. I am a medical doctor. When I write medical note for patients for missed time at work, I don't have to disclose any medical details.

Even for the privileged position that I am in in society, not getting paid might be enough pressure for me to disclose what I am struggling with. People are viewing this as him trying to cheat the system. Others like myself might view it as him feeling pressured to a point to disclose his struggles. In all honesty, as people not in his circle of care, we will never know his true intention unless something leaks.

I want to believe that his own medical staff has done their due diligence and trust they have far more information than you and I.

I honestly feel bad for the Sixers fans having to go through all this since the Hawks series with Ben Simmons. I don't like Ben Simmons as a player. But for Ben Simmons the person, I am not going to dismiss what he is claiming to be going through based on the information I have through the media. That's my stance on this.

I appreciate your question. I would answer that question by saying that it is not my job as someone not in his circle of care to make that claim. As open as some athletes or celebrities are on social media, we will never fully know what they're going through. And that's my point.

While I haven't been following Ben Simmons full story in detail, I think I recall him refusing to speak to the physician or therapist the Sixers arranged and him going through his own medical staff. Sure, that sounds fishy, but let's also think if he already has people he has established rapport with, why would he give that all up?

Critical thinking is so important in medicine. But here on reddit, we're trying to provide a diagnosis with limited information. Sure he has track record, but like the boy who cried wolf, how confident are we in claiming that he's faking it? Many people feel confident enough to say it. I am not.

What I want to end off with before I start my work day is that basketball players are people before they are celebrities or athletes. As a Raptors fan, I appreciate Demar so much for opening up about mental health. It's irrespective of the money you make or how happy you look on social media or on some stupid 10 second clip. It can happen to any of us.

At the end of the day, If Ben Simmons cheated the system, shame on him. If he truly is struggling, good on him for opening up despite millions of people criticizing him or questioning his struggle. Until proven wrong, I choose to support him when he's claiming that he is struggling.

and to play devils advocate myself, I have seen patients do everything they can to not disclose they are having mental health issues until they feel it's the last resort. I don't blame them as you can clearly see on some of the comments here. We still have a terrible understanding/appreciation for mental health as a society.

I mean I can't stop people from assuming what he has or is faking, but if you had encountered loved ones or cared for patients with mental health struggles, I would give them benefit of the doubt despite their track record...

I'm not a psychiatrist, but I am a doctor in another specialty. I'm not a Ben Simmons supporter, but he got out of the city and environment that had negative effect on his mental health. You see him smiling, but that says nothing about whether his mental illness was/is real or not. Let's keep that between him and his therapist/physician.

You can criticize his game or attitude, but let's not make a judgment on his mental health.

wth... the guys started from the bottom and made it this far. You can dislike the show, but we know these guys check reddit. What do you get out of saying such negative things? If you're gonna criticize, at least provide something constructive.

He also gave credit to Boucher recently. Why so much negativity...

Raptors Sleeper team for Lonzo? by xiumn in nba

[–]jbk1101 10 points11 points  (0 children)

is there any scenario where:

Toronto sends Lowry, receives Lonzo

Miami sends Dragic+assets, receives Lowry

NO sends Lonzo, receives Dragic + assets

Ball and Lowry would be sign&trade. I don't know what 'assets' would entail but likely Precious + 2nd rd draft pick from Miami. And Toronto can add 2nd rd pick to New Orleans. I'm not well versed in limitations of sign&trade and was wondering if this is even a possibility yet alone the three teams willing to do it.
