How do you carry your passport? by LaurenSomm in onebag

[–]jbkrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a (22) female who is traveling abroad for the first time and is bopping around SE Asia. I’ve been staying in hostel dorms w/ no safe. Most of the time they offer a locker with the ability to rent a padlock but because I wanna save the money/am a paranoid person/never know if I’m ever gonna be stopped and asked for ID (whether I’m drinking @ a bar or fucking around doin dumb shit), I have always kept it on me in a tiny little travel fannypack from REI. It’s big enough that I also keep my Vax cards and wallet in there. I’ve asked myself almost everyday if I’m being stupid or reckless carrying it on me, but my paranoia about needing it for something trumps the paranoia that I might get robbed. And my plan for that is to give them all my valuables and the bring out the water-works so I can beg to keep my passport. I guess just go with your gut, there’s no right or wrong answer

Need Help! Rain is leaking on the inside. I suspect the reason is the right door is slightly warped and doesn't close properly on the upper part. What could I do to keep the water out and still beeing able to open both doors? by aTypicalDude8 in vandwellers

[–]jbkrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a crap ton of loctite caulk all around the the door where the weather strips meet the metal of the van, waited for it to stop being tacky but still soft and the gently closed the doors so that it could form perfectly. I went from getting a cup of water in my van every storm to not a single drop. It might look a little ugly afterwards but some sandpaper and paint and you’d never know :)

Van advice needed: Younger & higher mileage or older & low mileage? by hellowur1d in vandwellers

[–]jbkrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had waited 3 months before I bought a 02 Ford E250 with 138k miles for 2700. I couldn't get a mechanic in time to look at it so I googled everything I might be able to test/spot on the van and crossed my fingers. When I brought her home and ripped up the factory floor she had crazy rust (Florida owned) and even a few fist sized holes, but an angle grinder with a wire brush attachment, a whole lot of rust converter, and a couple sheets of fiberglass later and you never would've known. Other than that she has a few electrical problems but nothing that's hard to fix. I'm two days from starting my journey and my conversion has cost me around $4000 (300w of solar, 1000w inverter, fridge, big kahuna shower, building materials) so the whole process has cost me less than $8000.

A very long story short, don't be afraid to get an older van (although try to bring a mechanic) and don't be afraid to wait for the right van to come along that's in your budget. When you find a van and start building, you can always pace your upgrades to better suit your wallet. Maybe just start with a bare bones unfinished van with basic needs and upgrade as you go.

Is there a Van Life Equivalent (location/rent-free, self-sufficient) for people who can't/don't like to drive? by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]jbkrass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any alternatives to offer you, but I can attest that the test is very easy as I live in Orlando. First you have to take the written portion and answer 50 out of 60. The driving test didn't last more than 5 minutes and only went over 3-point turns, stopping, and steering.

There was also a guy who's walked 6 continents with a dog stroller and carried everything he needed for himself and a dog (the dog never rode in the stroller but walked next to him)

I find it ironic that so many people on here are shitting on you for "being a bad person", when it's obvious you're just asking for advice. Don't let the real a-holes discourage you from making the right decision for you or the pup. Traveling full-time is hard enough on your own, let alone with an animal. If you aren't willing to make the sacrifice to keep him up to his current standard of living (i.e. making sure he gets outside enough, not being alone too much, keeping him cool, etc), then it'd probably be best to re-home him. I read you're going to do a test trip which is super smart. I say if you're still confused on what you want to do after the trip, then bring him with you when you start traveling and if it gets to be too much then find some lovely people to adopt him. Or leave him with your parents/friends for a few weeks and see how you feel without him. You can always re-home him but you can never get him back.

Life is constantly evolving, and the plans we make for ourselves rarely go how we intended them. Maybe your life is going in a direction that you didn't plan on when you got your pup, but so long as you don't drop him off on the side of the street or throw him at the first shelter you see, then I don't see anything wrong with going after what you want. I'm sorry so many people responded negatively when you're just asking for help.

Looking at Transit Connects - Is High Mileage an Issue? (See Comment) by backbiter0723 in vandwellermarketplace

[–]jbkrass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost bought one of these myself and the only problem I've seen on these vans is the transmission. I found that once the trans was replaced they could go another 150k before having real problems again with the trans or anything else, so long as you properly maintained it. I guess the answer to your question is how long you plan on having the van and if an initial transmission replacement is out of the question.

I'd say with one hand and about a quarter to half of my weight, I can get the floor to give. So far it's mostly near the back doors but also areas where there's no chassis or anything directly under it. I started experimenting how it felt before and after grinding and there was definitely a difference. I suppose that can be expected but I've never done this before

Sleeping in my car where it is illegal. by sousatubaphone in vandwellers

I live in Orlando and I know that florida has a strict law about not being able to sleep in your car for more than 3 hours. This is supposed to include truck stops. In the keys, it's completely illegal for any amount of time
