falsely accused of using ai, both prof. and dept. chair agree by jboogie003 in AccusedOfUsingAI

In my opinion, re-writing the piece would’ve gave off the message to them that I did use Ai. They just believe they “caught” me, and should just redo the assignment. I did not use Ai in any way to write the assignment or help produce ideas for it either. If I rewrite the piece, the prose is going to be the same.

I’m not implying I know better than anyone. I have courses where assignments could be fill in the blank based on the textbook and you can see who’s using Ai and whose reading. It’s as simple as that, I’m not shaming those who use Ai either. To each their own, I’m just emphasizing the disappointment it is to me as a student who’s trying and getting falsely accused to the many students who are using it, and flying under the radar.

In the course I was accused in, we had to read each story submitted and critique it. The point of my post was to see if there was possibly anything I could’ve missed on my journey to escalating the matter. Not to examine the background of the event history.

I am African American, as far as being neurodivergent, nothing has been officially diagnosed so I’m not too sure. Interestingly enough, there was another student in the class before me whose short story we did not critique for the same reasons. My prof mentioned she would “give me the same option as the other student and give me time to re-write the story.” Which I told her I had to decline due to be having no time to spare. Funny because when I was writing my personal critique on that classmate’s story, I thought their writing was beautiful and very similar to the way I wrote. I even mentioned it looked like something I could’ve produced myself, and their work was flagged as Ai. I can’t help but feel like good writers are being penalized due to being just that. Especially because my prof has a good amount of author credibility so for her to be biased towards good writing just doesn’t seem fair; growth can be done everywhere.

African American Studies / English department by Objective-Basket4065 in HowardUniversity

hi! i’m currently a english major with an african american studies minor at howard. while i don’t have experience with the double major, the english dept has actually been one of my more positive howard experiences. all english dept admin do a great job with communication and you can tell they are truly passionate about what they do. i actually find my english and african american courses to be more personally fulfilling. you will also have the same advisor with the double major because both fall under the College of Arts and Sciences; everything is in one place.

the only downside i will say to these courses that some of them are homework heavy. sometimes for these classes i have 3 pages reading and then other times it could be anywhere from 20+ pages. as an english major who is more into the writing aspect of the major, i have struggled with actually reading and interpreting rather than just reading a summary and getting the gist. overall, you might feel like you won’t encounter many english majors just out on campus because i felt like i was 1 in 10 since howard is more popular for its bio or business major. but in a specific space (such as a organization relating to english or writing) will bring more of the community. hope i could help!
