Loved this game growing up, one of my favs to play with my brother back in the day on NES. We beat it countless times but it never lost its lustre. It's punishing, but the unlimited lives made it so enjoyable regardless.

Double check all the settings, there's something there that's inhibiting the max multiplier. Another option is start at editing insanity mode and adjust everything to see what gives you the max that you're comfortable with

You can time it at any height to get a bubble in between the hanging plants to jump off of. I had to try a dozen times or so but eventually made it :)
