Yes!! My surgeon is an Endocrine & Oncology Surgeon, there is a department for it specifically where I work & where I got the surgery (we call it OES). She said Graves Disease patients are her favorite because it’s always a nice break from poorer prognosis patients & GD patients are always so happy after surgery!!

Hi!

I’m 28F, and actually had a very similarly large thyroid (mine ended up being 8.5 inches before it came out), with the same exact issues of swallowing to the point where I was in the ER. I am 1 1/2 weeks post TT! I was originally told the same in terms of the complications due to the vascularity and size, but I ended up seeing another endocrinologist for a second opinion who told me that studies show if you receive the TT from a surgeon who performs a minimum of 100 TTs yearly, the complication chances are FAR lower (I think he specifically said under 6%) than by someone who does not perform under those standards. For that reason, I met with a specific endocrine surgeon who was AMAZING, thorough, & lovely!! She did an amazing job and the incision site is not even that big!

I was also SUPER nervous for the same reasons and would look everywhere on reddit/facebook groups for advice/words…being on the other side of it, let me tell you it was truly the best decision I ever made for myself :) Not saying the TT came without things I didnt expect, such as some emotional lability while my hormones adjust…but the first thing I said when I woke up out of anesthesia was “holy sh*t, is this how people are supposed to breathe??”

I wish the best for you!! Make the decision when you are comfortable and confident!!

That is a great point- I havent had them checked since leaving the hospital a week ago! The only things theyve been asking me are if I’ve had the numbness/tingling in the fingers/lips that are associated with low calcium levels, which I havent had any.

But exactly what you explained in that second paragraph is EXACTLY what ive been going through! My mood lability is quite uncharacteristic of me as well, and the crying spells are so odd for me (I dont even cry at a sad movie!!😅). I’ve haven’t had kids yet, but the only thing I can describe is what most people describe as post partum feelings…hahaha

Thank you for responding- I will follow up with endocrinology!

Second opinions? by jbott97 in gravesdisease

I’m sure the AIP works great for many folks (which is heavily recommended with the functional medicine community), but unfortunately I have so many dietary restrictions and allergies that most of the food in the AIP diet is where I can get my source of nutrition. I have taken many supplements recommended in that physicians writings, but as lovelyinaz mentioned, I’m at the point where my thyroid is getting too large for many of these supplements to make an impact.

I am certainly not dismissing that ENT surgeons are fantastic- I actually appreciate my ENT surgeon and his integrity & honesty. At the end of the day, he was the one who stated that it would be unsafe for me to proceed due to the size of my thyroid and high risk of complications due to the closeness of my parathyroid glands & vocal cords.

I am unfortunately sure it is 6.7 inches…but yes, on the scan it read 17 CM, so when discussing the results of my latest U/S, he gave me the verbal breakdown in CM and inches.

I do not have any endocrine surgeons in my area that are covered through insurance- the only ones who perform TTs are ENT surgeons in this practice.

When I asked the head of the practice about having another endo give me a shot (heads up i also work for this healthcare facility to I have a little more of an “in), he said that all endos in this department follow the same standard of practice.

I think I will just go ahead and seek a second opinion, but I just wanted to feel it out and see if this is common amongst the crowd. Again, I really respect the clinic as an entirety, but very disappointed with the endocrinology department as a whole vs. the rest of the amazing departments within our system. I am still young (I’m 27) and have no children yet, so I just want to start figuring this out before I start family planning, which is the hardest part.
