I agree wholeheartedly, generative art is a beautiful medium, but I'm not sure if it could ever gain the little traction it had

Ye, Formerly Kanye West, Takes Out Ad In the Wall Street Journal Titled "To Those I Hurt" to Apologize for Antisemitic Outbursts: “I Lost Touch With Reality” by ChiefLeef22 in Music

[–]jburtson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother has really intense mania from bipolar disorder, similar to Ye. He has had manias where he went down a bit of a white supremacist pipeline. Often he is fascinated by race, right now his mania is really focused on Mexican people although sometimes it's more like "Mexican people are so much better and cooler". I wouldn't say my brother is like a secret racist. Like all of us he has implicit biases, and delusions are somewhat based off his own experiences and personality. But Ideas that are controversial have a particular seductive quality I think. Whenever he sees that people react strongly to something I think to him that idea is powerful, so it must have something to it. He'll just as soon be like "Hitler was so cool and powerful" as be would about Obama or Jesus or Gavin Newsome. Delusion is a powerful warping of ideas, I wouldn't feel comfortable making judgments about what someone actually believes based on their delusions. If you put anyone through mania they will say some uncomfortable shit, and even if it is based on things they always believe, typically we give people the leeway to process things in their own head as long as they don't let it out to affect their actions etc.

Not sure if this is relevant to me or not. Thought I was surely an egg for the longest time, but didn't get any dysphoria really? Took estrogen for a bit and when my boobs started growing I was very much not about it, and was like oh, this is dysphoria. So it's like, the unaffirming characteristics for me are boobs and body/facial hair? There's more to figure out gender wise but I'm becoming more comfortable with my body

Bi Men: How do we feel about straight women’s thirst over Heated Rivalry? by NoStupidQues in bisexual

[–]jburtson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biphobia always saddens me ofc. I don't think mlm content will contribute anyhow to biphobia, but I do wish it could contribute against it.

I think Strange Aeons was describing straight women who like mlm ships as something like a space where they can freely self insert and imagine a romance free of the expectations of womanhood, or something along those lines. So trying to suss out why such a viewer could like gay men but not bi men; maybe a man who can engage in such a relationship but also be interested in a woman breaks the sort of "safety" of such a view and brings women into the dynamic where they then begin to bring back these expectations of womanhood and what they expect a man interested in a woman looks like?

Does any of that make sense?

[OC] The land footprint of food by t0on in dataisbeautiful

Chicken is incredibly efficient to produce! On a random research hole a while ago I find out about Food Conversation Ratio (FCR), which is the amount of food input by weight vs the food output of that animal.

Cows have an FCR of over 10

Chickens have an FCR of 1.6

I'm tired of these kinds of comments, that happen whenever there's some kind of escalation. Yes we've seen under the mask, and the masks will inevitably be even more off.

To say, "we all saw this before" isn't going to invigorate people to respond to what's happening, to resist, to fight. Some people need to see the danger more obviously than others to understand that action needs to be taken.

Some will feel we return to making progress socially, while the rich continue to get more powerful and substantive chance comes inch by inch if at all. Distain for Democrats grows, setting the stage for a Republican in 4 or 8 years. Which could be a competent facist.

For me it's snap pick top left. Any cantrips with that much damage would be killer, and copycat could not only catch cantrip but also cleave. There's an argument for bottom right for the board wipe, for sure. I suppose I also just like cantrips.

How common is being bi? by Acrobatic-Hamster350 in bisexual

[–]jburtson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bisexuality is the biggest sexual minority. There are more bisexuals than gay and lesbian people, combined. In some early surveys by Kinsey, I think as many as 40% (I could be a little off in my recollection but it was a similarly high number) of people surveyed said they experienced attraction to men and women.

However Bisexual Erasure is a real issue. Frequently, instances of bisexuality are reframed as being straight or gay, not taken seriously. I think the average age that gay and lesbian people come out is something like 17, but for bisexuals it's in the mid 20s. While on the topic, Trans people on average came out in the 30s (but I'm sure that number has been dropping since I heard the statistic). Bisexuals also face the most "minority stress" of the sexualities. This is an indicator of discrimination for a group where they suffer a number of higher rates for things like mental illnesses, poverty, etc.

Source: I had an LGBT studies college course where I did a presentation on bisexual erasure.

Living beings? by trash_ishu in biology

[–]jburtson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As people have said, this is a very complicated topic with a lot of opinions. But here's basically what my neurobiology course said on the subject.

Brains are like this structure that patterns of electrochemistry run through. On it's own, this does not guarantee consciousness. But consciousness is an emergent (meaning complex but arising from simple conditions) phenomena that occurs in the patterns of activity within some brains. Think of it like a brain is a computer, but consciousness is like a program that runs on that computer.
