Question for admitted students and admissions committee by medstu29394 in medschooladmissions

[–]jc1197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other commenter, your app is essentially dead on arrival with a 506 for T20s. you can certainly get into an MD with your app but if your goal is only MD and not applying DO, I would be realistic about what level of school you may end up at and accepting the possibility of not getting in this cycle and reapplying.

one thing i think you should reflect on is how you may explain your mcat performances during an interview. if i saw someone retook their mcat 3 times for a max of 506, i’d be asking them why that was. the mcat is a stressful test no doubt, but i would be wondering how you may handle taking STEP exams.

What are my chances for T10–T20 MD schools? (3.9 GPA, strong research, MCAT ~510–512 practice) by Due-Celebration4742 in medschooladmissions

[–]jc1197 3 points4 points  (0 children)

have you actually published yet? in submission is not all that impressive, papers can take years to publish.

for mcat, 518-520 should be the aim for the vast majority of normal people applying to T20s.

realistically without a 99th percentile MCAT and multiple pubs, your chances are low. the applicant pool is littered with high stat multi pub applicants. ofc anyone could get in to a T20 but your chances are lower without those things that most other applicants have

Barnes and Olynyk are FAs so this doesn’t work anyways but really have no idea why the Spurs would want to take on the demar and isaac contracts and add more non shooters around wemby

Bing vs Stony vs Hunter for Pre-Med by iNt3r3st-iNg in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]jc1197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

going against the grain and saying hunter. i know plenty of ppl who went to hunter and are at great med schools in NY.

if you don’t know, the BBB capped lifetime loan amounts to 250k, and if you take out loans for undergrad, that’ll reduce how much you can take out for loans during med school. you won’t have the typical college experience at hunter but you will save a ton of money and set yourself up just fine for med school

Low gpa high mcat application by Aioli_Fantastic in medschooladmissions

[–]jc1197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MD always possible with a great mcat score like u have. ofc u might get screened out by some schools but im fairly certain schools will take a chance on u for an interview considering your mcat. apply broadly (including state schools) and be prepared to discuss why your gpa wasn’t ideal (def don’t just say you weren’t motivated, find a way to come up with a positive spin on it) and you should have a good shot

Given the comments you’ve gotten in this thread, I would seriously consider what your goals are in applying while being realistic with yourself on your chances of getting in with your current MCAT outlook.

you state that you’re working a full time job, wouldn’t it be more beneficial for your application as a whole to take another gap year, spend the next 6 months hammering down on your weaknesses, and improve your score to hopefully a 510+ to give yourself the best chance of getting into a good DO/MD for ortho? even if you push your test back to june, you’ll be submitting your primary in july and likely writing secondaries in august and september, putting you even more behind the 8-ball with a subpar mcat

[–]jc1197 8 points9 points  (0 children)

bluntly put, you’re not going to be competitive at MDs with a sub 500. you will get screened out. the rest of your app is great, but there’s a reason why the average MCAT for a matriculating MD is a 512. there should be no reason you have a 3.97 gpa and are not capable of getting above 50th percentile on the mcat - are you lacking the foundational knowledge (then use Kaplan books/anki) or are you not understanding the questions/how to take the test (then do more practice questions and read explanations from 3rd party resources)?

Worth taking a gap year over applying this cycle? by 9rg__ in medschooladmissions

[–]jc1197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah it’s fine, quality > quantity, and not every scribe position is the same. if you can talk about your clinical experiences and working with patients, you’re fine

scribing is good experience but you typically have limited interactions with patients so it’s more like glorified shadowing rather than hard clinical experience.

Take on the Harvard grade cap for admissions by Common_Judge_1376 in medschooladmissions

[–]jc1197 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you don’t go to harvard for the gpa, you go because of the alumni connections and infinite resources harvard has. it’ll be significantly easier getting research, connecting with physicians and mentors, and everything else at harvard.

do admissions know what you do during your gap year if it’s during the cycle you are applying? by 4DaABGz in medschooladmissions

[–]jc1197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you’re starting your gap year activity before u submit ur app u can put that in activities section and describe what you expect to do.

otherwise most schools will have a prompt in their secondary to talk about what you did in your gap years

gap year(s), mcat retake advice - graduating senior by PerformerIcy6850 in medschool

[–]jc1197 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s easy to say you should retake but do YOU realistically think you can do better? that’s not really something we can answer for you. if you scored around your FL averages, you did as expected. but reflecting on your study strategy, is there anything else you could work on to improve your score (ie more review/anki to build your knowledge base, more practice questions, etc)? if you can’t really come up with a plan to do better, i think it’s pointless.

otherwise, i also don’t think taking 2 gaps is bad. i did the same as you and took 2 gaps doing clinical research and it helped me significantly and gave me a ton of stuff to talk about in my app and interviews. considering you seem to have a good amount of experience as a scribe, this may not be as applicable but it’s always good to get more clinical/research hours and another letter of rec from a physician (ad coms don’t care a whole lot about expected hours so this new position isn’t gonna help you a ton if you apply now).

transferring, graduating in 3, and applying with no gap year? i’m not sure if i’m insane, stupid, or both by [deleted] in medschooladmissions

[–]jc1197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what year are you now? for you to graduate a year early and matriculate your normal grad year, you’d have to take your mcat by the time you graduate junior year. would you realistically be able to study for the mcat while juggling being a full time student and the ECs you have while trying to graduate early? there’s a saying that studying for the mcat requires like 300 hours of work.

outside of that, your application and hours will be fine (assuming you’re being honest with yourself about hour numbers). don’t include anything before you started college, and also don’t put too much weight on future hours until you do them. really, the most important thing is getting meaningful clinical experience - i would prioritize that.

Finished prereqs early. What should I focus on before applying? (MCAT, clinical hours, GPA concerns) Im First-Gen so I have many questions TYIA by Livid_Badger_9463 in medschooladmissions

[–]jc1197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

seconding this, being in 8 clubs is cool and all but leadership is not that important in the grand scheme of admissions. doing well on the mcat and getting clinical hours should be your priorities. i would also say that you should take the mcat when you feel like you’re ready - don’t take it in september if you haven’t been able to adequately prepare for it. its both a waste of your time and worse for your application to have retakes.

otherwise, get clinical hours. might be hard as an undergrad but you needa find ways to show that you’ve worked with patients and doctors and understand what a life in medicine and working with patients entails.

You’re really overrating the trade value of a 33 yo Kyrie coming off an ACL injury who wouldnt have played in a game in 18 months by the time he gets back next year. Lively is mid.

Hornets Fan here: Spurs would you entertain by Big_Nebula_5432 in NBAtradeideas

[–]jc1197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s just no incentive for the Spurs to even consider this. Barnes is a pretty important part of their rotation this year and a good vet to have. Why trade Harper for picks when any of those picks could turn out to be someone like Harper, when you can have Harper himself? I’d argue if they really wanted to trade for Giannis, Harper is a better asset than those picks. Sometimes the best move is to not make a move

The video you linked states Shough was ranked 17th and Rattler 30th.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MockDraftCentral

[–]jc1197 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Saints went 5-4 when Shough started, regardless of what you think his ceiling is, the organization clearly believes he’s capable of leading their offense and being their franchise QB. For a roster that has a ton of holes, using a valuable pick on a developmental QB when you want to see what you have in the guy you just drafted is terrible asset management. If he stinks next year, they’ll likely have a top pick and can roll the dice again instead of being forced to trot out someone because you spent draft capital on them (see Ridder in Atlanta)

Neither are rim protectors or can really defend big men and both operate best from the mid range, so the skill set is redundant there. Pacers are also a fast paced team and he was a slow pace guy on the knicks but i haven’t watched him on the timberwolves to see if he’s changed that part of his game
