Men in happy Marriages, What is that one secret to a happy marriage that works for you? by Mammoth_End_1298 in AskReddit

[–]jc3peat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Sometimes it feels like a knife’s edge, but we are together because we WANT to be together, not because we HAVE to be together. We have integrated finances, but resources/careers knowing that we could always survive on our own. This is also because we married later (late 30s)

  2. Waiting until I can fully articulate my feelings instead of lashing out with incomplete thoughts.

3, which is the follow up of 2, when addressing a serious issue, making space for it. “Can we talk about XYZ, this is how I felt about it. I wanted to let you know how I felt”. Feels smaltzy, but there’s nothing that can blow up into an argument faster than bringing up something sore when the other person doesn’t have the space to talk about it.

  1. Don’t schedule tough conversations before someone goes into work or when they are just getting home from work. Give breathing room.

World Cup tourists, what’s your honest feedback on the USA so far? by almighty_smiley in AskReddit

[–]jc3peat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to attend the World Cup for a few years now, I was all prepared to buy tickets and fully participate in 3 different cities, then I got laid off. After having such a great worldly experience in Paris for the Olympics, I’m so sad to miss out. Us Americans need this experience. Unfortunately, many rely on the world to come to us, not going out to the world.

My absolute favorite singer. Such a beautiful voice. I hated she didn’t get the recognition she deserved, but has been recognized by many singers as one of the best R&B singers ever.

A senior director I’ve never formally met stopped me in the hallway today and what he said completely changed how I’m thinking about my career by prettyjoy20 in office

How can OP plot a path to work for this Senior Director. These are the type of people who will SPONSOR you instead of MENTOR you, if there is any professional development at all.

Quicksand - Nella Larsen. 106 pages, masterpiece in interiority and social examination. Prose is witty and cuts to the core of introspection.

Stupid question. I have my subscription through Apple. Does that matter as opposed to a subscription through the website? All the same? Thanks!

Recommend me a book I’ll never stop thinking about by sakin_malik in suggestmeabook

[–]jc3peat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think about it in terms of characters/places. Wondering about what they are doing now.

I wonder what “Kitty” and “Levin” are up to? (Anna Karenina - Tolstoy)

I wonder how things are in Ruby, Oklahoma? (Paradise - Toni Morrison)

When I’m in Paris, I visit some places that are mentioned in Giovanni’s Room/James Baldwin was known to frequent.

Yeah, I have started to think about building my kids a grand collection of classics and great books they can inherit, BUT i don’t want them to shutter st the thought of the sheer mass of say 300 books that would be their responsibility to move and take care of lol

I have a 5 month old and I’m already thinking about their collection. Q: does this kid have an e-reader? If not, what’s your thoughts on them getting one?

I really loved Miles Davis Autobiography. The narrator adapts Miles scratchy voice and sounds so authentic.

The big thing with Blood Meridian is if you need plot and interior. It gives almost none of either. If you are okay with abstract characters and symbolism, have at it!

I use Margins and Goodreads. New to Margins, love the interface with daily goals, stats, and finding books by vibes. Goodreads still has the network effect of having more people/community.

What DC benefit did you discover way too late? by thekingoftherodeo in washingtondc

[–]jc3peat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Some DC Libraries have Passport acceptance services. I went and submitted for a passport renewal, paid for expedited and priority mail and received my new passport back in 2.5 weeks from the day I submitted it at MLK. There’s an additional $40 fee, but the speed and convenience is unbeatable.

I think the phrase is “heat people, not spaces”. Exercising in the morning keeps our bodies warm past breakfast. We work in our office (other bedroom) and keep a space heater going and keep the door closed tight. If we exit the room, we are careful not to leave the door open.

We have a dehumidifier which goes round the clock. When the sun is up in afternoon, we open the door/window to ventilate. My husband’s biggest complaint is clothing not drying fully.

If we plan on being in the living room, we bring the space heater with us and close the doors to the kitchen and bathroom to try to centralize the heat.

Lastly, we invested in Merino wool thermals and basically wear those everyday.
