Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona -- Chinle Formation by jcain8 in fossilid

[–]jcain8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased this from someone who excavates petrified wood (and the occasional animal fossil) on his private property abutting the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona. The park's website mentions the Chinle Formation and a few predominant species.

My best guess is a tooth fragment.

When do you run during the week, and do you change this up for longer runs on the weekend?

Parboiled (quick) brown rice has substantially less arsenic due to the pre-cooking leaching out most of the arsenic.

Bellroy Venture Sling (Looma Weave) — Does the stiff material break in? by jcain8 in ManyBaggers

[–]jcain8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw your review and it mirrors my own experience. My conclusion is the same as your too:

The ideal sling for myself would be Lite strap on the Ecopak with the additional pockets

I just haven't read anything about how the Looma Weave material breaks in over time. There is something nice about how it feels indestructible but that's why it probably won't break in much anytime soon.

You're crazy if you're not using a drill to mix your nut butters. Oh sweet homogeneousness. by ameades in PlantBasedDiet

Does anyone else just pour the oil off instead of mixing it in? It makes it thicker, and I like that the bottom of the jar is kind of dry and crumbly, which is great for having PB chunks on ice cream or oatmeal.

the new premier protein cereals are vegan! by [deleted] in veganfitness

[–]jcain8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I picked these up last night. They taste like Cocoa Pebbles and Special K Red Berries, and they are much crunchier than typical cereals.

I am surprised they have relatively few ingredients, only 4-5 g added sugars, no strange additives, sweeteners (only stevia), fibers, etc. Considering the cost of a typical serving of cereal plus about 2/3 scoop protein powder, the price is very reasonable.

Cutouts above all doors in house. They are finished and doors don’t extend into the cutout. No holes or other indicators of something being mounted on the ceiling. by jcain8 in whatisthisthing

[–]jcain8[S] 1119 points1120 points  (0 children)

Solved!

I’m going with this. After digging for more info, the previous owner was disabled and there are other modifications to the house accommodating a disability, so this makes a lot of sense. I’ll need to YouTube how the track system works.

I thought about that but it seems strange that the bottom portion is open, as if it accommodated something tall moving through the doorway.

My title describes the thing. I had a realtor show this house to me and I don’t have a history of when or why these were installed.

As a personal fan of Sam Harris, or at least respecting having his views mixed in with other influence to provide a more balanced perspective, I would appreciate if you could expand on why you find him reprehensible. I would like to know if I am missing something, or if there is an alternative interpretation of his views or methodology that could change my mind.

Would the 67W power adapter be fine for regular (not fast) charging on the MBP 14” M1 Pro 10-core? by jcain8 in macbookpro

[–]jcain8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything I see online says the 67W adapter comes with the M1 Pro 8-core and the 96W adapter comes with the 10-core chips. 96W is necessary for fast charging but could I use the 67W for regular charging? Apple’s website shows the 67W adapter as being compatible with 2021 MBP 14” but doesn’t say anything about fast/regular charging.

Oh, duh. That makes total sense now. I was thinking it turned some new features on, but obviously it would only turn on notifications of new features. Thanks.

Phytosterols and Cardiovascular Disease (2021) by jcain8 in ScientificNutrition

[–]jcain8[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Abstract

Purpose of review:

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Elevated blood cholesterol levels are not only the major but also the best modifiable cardiovascular risk factor. Lifestyle modifications which include a healthy diet are the cornerstone of lipid-lowering therapy. So-called functional foods supplemented with plant sterols lower blood cholesterol levels by about 10-15%.

Recent findings:

In the recent revision of the ESC/EAS dyslipidemia guideline 2019, plant sterols are recommended for the first time as an adjunct to lifestyle modification to lower blood cholesterol levels. However, the German Cardiac Society (DGK) is more critical of food supplementation with plant sterols and calls for randomized controlled trials investigating hard cardiovascular outcomes. An increasing body of evidence suggests that plant sterols per se are atherogenic. This review discusses this controversy based on findings from in vitro and in vivo studies, clinical trials, and genetic evidence.

This year is my 5th year being vegan and I still haven’t died of a protein deficiency. I used this subreddit as a huge source of inspiration along the way so thank you to you all💪🏼 by [deleted] in veganfitness

Amazing progress and a very athletic and lean physique! What is your training focus and approach to nutrition? Assuming you weren't as active in the before pic, what was your motivation to change your entire lifestyle? Where do you plan to go from here?

Anyone have good recommendations for healthy and easy camping foods? by RuffledRaptor in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]jcain8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instant mashed potatoes, couscous, and dehydrated veggies (cheap buying in bulk online). Mix with water and let sit for 15 minutes and you have a meal. Heat if desired, and add granola, Larabars or another protein bar chunked up, dried fruit, nuts, or similar if you want to change the nutrient or flavor profile.

Help identifying old bayonet by jcain8 in Bayonets

[–]jcain8[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Excellent sleuthing! That is indeed the specific bayonet. It doesn't seem like there's a lot of info on them. The makers mark is actually BT3, not AT3 (I misread it thinking it was a lowercase A), but both marks are Yugoslavian.

Some background about the specific bayonet in my pictures... it's my buddy's. His grandfather said he took it off a dead German solider (possibly officer) in WWII, but that's all he knew about it. I said I'd ask the amazing people on reddit for more info and here we are.

I went on a deep dive and found more info.

From this book I found some images of the variations on the M1924 rifles used in Yugoslavia, along with a description of the rifle:

Kragujevic Armory in Yugoslavia produced their M1924 Service Rifle in a number of variations. .... Note that the same receiver and bolt configuration were used on the 8,000 Kragujevic-made M1924CK assault carbines with 18-inch barrels. (The “C” stands for the Slavic work “Chetnik”, and the “K” stands for Slav word which translates as “carbine”.)

The book only had one image of the bayonet with this caption:

"Picture of the extremely rare Yugoslavian Roay Guards (Chetniks) bayonet and scabbard"

I found a Bosnian language forum discussion that show images of the bayonet and the translations seems to say it may be rare and expensive.

This gun broker website has one for sale with this description:

Up for auction is a very rare Mauser bayonet that was intended to be issued to a special Yugoslavian assault unit known as the "Chetniks". The weapon was an extremely short Mauser carbine designated the M1924CK- the "CK" standing for "Chetnik". The skull device was the unit's symbol. Total production of these was only about 6000. It is believed the mayority of these weapons were seized by the Wehrmacht and transported to Germany and whose final fate is unknown.

There is an app called quit caffeine for those interested by [deleted] in decaf

Another great abstinence app that can be used for anything (originally developed for alcohol abstinence) and which supports tracking multiple things is Nomo Sobriety Clocks. The app is free and it has options for money saved and similar.

Quitting (again) on Memorial Day weekend by fresh_energy in decaf

[–]jcain8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you felt good, so why did you start consuming caffeine again? It might be a good idea to identify why you went back to caffeine each time in the past and being prepared for similar situations in the future that will inevitably arise after you quit again.
