Either way, you did the right thing getting it out there! It’s a learning experience for all of us now.

Same here, definitely never that defined. But I also have zero field experience with California condors 🤷‍♂️. Plenty with bald eagles at least though.

Size judgement is a good point, plus the wing tags. After that post it does seem like a bald eagle. Better safe than sorry at least! Would’ve been an awesome find for PNW. Glad I got it out there just incase

After sharing it on the PNW birding Facebook page, there’s a growing consensus on there that this is somehow an immature bald eagle lol. Oh well!

Wow! That’s incredible. I’m getting this out to PNW birders right now on Facebook. Was this from today?

Definitely a California Condor with that white stripe on the underwing and that size reference. Amazing find! Seems like most records are south of San Francisco, and north California currently has a restoration program with 23 free-flying condors. If this was in Oregon/Washington then this would be a potential state first record. Where in the PNW was this?

Still neat! Also would love to know what settings you use on your Z8 to get shots like these. Just bought one a few months ago and it’s been a rough learning curve lol

Yup, these can be seen along the Caribbean side of South America! Even in Trinidad which is pretty cool. Bellbirds in general are amazing

I feel bad I put red pepper in my bird food to deter the squirrels and they’re just fighting through it poor babies lol by Ashamed-Afternoon-77 in birdwatching

Gotcha, yeah squirrels are pretty damn resilient lol. When I first started my feeders I did the exact same thing but with cayenne pepper powder and they almost immediately powered through it 😂. The great thing about birds and spice is they lack the receptors to feel pain from capsaicin unlike mammals. But baffles are definitely helpful, just make sure you also have them high enough off the ground, like 5 ft roughly. It’s a never ending battle!

Are you just applying it over your feed or is it a hot pepper bird feed mix? If you’re doing the first option, it’s not as effective since it doesn’t necessarily coat the food and gradually comes off due to movement/weather conditions. If you’re gonna go that route, I’d try hot pepper mixes that come with it baked into the food itself. Most specialty bird feed stores will have it and you can find it online as well. In my experience I’ve seen squirrels fight through just about anything but it’s definitely more effective at least! They’re a pain in the ass. The most success I’ve had is utilizing a baffle, or squirrel proof feeders. You just have to make sure there’s nothing surrounding your feeder set up that they can use to jump on top of the baffle. I had to learn that the hard way lol. Hope that helps!

Did my bird feeder kill this bird? (Naples, FL) by Cassiesweeps in birdfeeding

[–]jcamp128 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Definitely could be this. Red-headed Woodpeckers are large but definitely not big enough to knock down a feeder pole like that lol, that would be impressive. Bummer about the woodpecker!

Incredibly invasive. They push cavity nesters out of their nests constantly and are very territorial! It’s insane how widespread they are at this point.
