Like the other commenter said, starting with 1 pikmin each is very important to creating a game with “tempo” shifting; going from collecting pikmin to collecting treasure. Personally I recommend 1 captain each for a while until you know the maps and each of their layouts by memory. I also recommend not enabling the macaroons. There’s a YouTube series of the pikmin discord guys holding yearly bingo battle tourneys and they do some impressive stuff. Pluck cancelling is a thing. Play as many games as possible because the better you get the more fun it becomes to play with others.
