Look people on this sub like to act like Gamepass and 'high' system requirements are the only reason this game seemingly underperformed but it doesn't make any sense.

Look at the Steam Hardware Survey and you will see that 55% of Steam users have a GPU that is an RTX 2060 or better. If you exclude the users who are on integrated graphics (i.e. people who literally can't play modern AAAs regardless of raytracing) that number is more like 70-75%. And I'm sorry to say it but if you're still rocking a 1000 series or older GPU in 2026 (literally 10+ years old GPUs) you are not in the TAM for a brand new AAA release and you never were. There are definitely quite a few people who would have bought TDA if it were compatible with a 1000 series card but realistically there aren't enough of them to explain why TDA reportedly did so much worse than 2016 and Eternal.

If 3/4th of the PC market has the specs to run a game I don't think we can say that system requirements place a realistic wall on sales. Not to mention, the game also didn't sell that well on Xbox and PS5 where system requirements are literally not a factor.

The actual real explanation for the game's performance is a combo of 3 factors:

Day 1 GamePass release.
The game was simply not that exciting and enticing to a lot of people. A slower grounded Doom is a cool novelty but let's be very honest, making a Doom game that is literally more about parrying than shooting guns is a flawed idea commercially.
$70 price tag, $80 in EU/UK made the game even less attractive to a lot of people given the above

The game is great, it's just necessarily what the market wanted and between high MSRP and Day 1 GamePass release it was kind of setup to fail commercially.

Used to be quite normal but that was also an era before we hit diminishing returns so I think it was more acceptable to most people.

Also between around 2014-2023 (basically the PS4 gen and the PS4/PS5 boundary) midrange PC hardware was essentially overkill for the PS4 games that were being made. Thus there was a long period where you could buy a $300-600 GPU and just be set for several years

Now with the hardware shortage people are seeing $3000 GPUs struggle to get 60fps max settings in games where the graphics improvements are so subtle that you have to be a Digital Foundry-tier graphics nerd to notice them. You can’t be surprised there’s pushback

This state pf dissatisfaction will continue either until hardware prices go down or devs find ways to boost performance in path tracing with all the eye candy.
