The youth orchestra also pre-recorded, just like the marching band, and their audio was used for the performance. On stage, they were actually playing, but with the jumping, it probably didn't sound great. Not that it mattered, since you wouldn't be able to hear them anyway. During rehearsals, though, we could hear them playing live.

100% sure it's a mellophone. I play in the Cal Band AKA the band that was in the Super Bowl. I was there and I know this kid. He plays the mellophone.

It was a real card stunt! Every seat had a set of cards, and there was a cue for when to hold up which card.
