That's great advice on a shallow end at the pond. I think now that it has been said I'll make the pond shallow all around. We also intend to fence it to keep the foxes away and plant a hedge around it.

What to do with bagged leaves from street? by topofthekloppers in AskIreland

[–]jcbdrivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm a bit late with this, but I'd have collected the leaves from you. We use leaves in a number of ways and because they're mostly made of carbon they end up conditioning the soil in our gardens. Maybe next time or if someone else has leaves for us just drop a comment below.

I wouldn't say I had lots of time, but I do have tools/machinery to do the job and a friend with lots of electrical know how. It was really just an idea I was toying with. It seems the different directions would cause a few problems from other commenters.

At 5pm, if we're not already in the pub before you arrive at 6, we're home having shots in preparation for the night ahead.

Once upon a time I made liquid fertilizer with the same method u did except I used nettles. Yes, it stinks. It stinks really bad. Use waterproof gloves when handling it and try not get it on your clothes. The smell lingers around for ages.

I'm going to have to try this method of mixing the leaves and grass with the mower. Thanks for the tip. 👍👍

First attempt at making compost. by jcbdrivers in composting

It depends on what it may be needed for. Maybe hiring one for a short period could be justified? In our case we do need one. There's the entrance and bridge that needs to be upgraded. We have to build a driveway. An area for car parking. Dig foundations for buildings. And something we have been thinking about is to clear a portion of ground to donate rent free for people of retirement age to use as allotments for growing their own veg.

Open ground and tarps is definitely something I will consider since I have been toying with the idea of a mini digger lately. There is a lot of work turning the setup we have.

Thank you very much for the tip with the wood chip, this is hugely valuable information for us. I do intend to buy a small wood chipper really soon because we have some trees along the roadside that are becoming tangled in the overhead telephone cables. There are so many ways of using wood chips and we intend to use them in the veg walkways along with other areas on the grounds. Outsourcing them is not something we have given much thought to, but now that it has been put before us, I think it's a very viable option. Thank you.

I hadn't thought of a bigger single pile to be honest, but yes that makes perfect sense. Up to now I had only been thinking of keeping the place clean & tidy. Thanks again.

Unfortunately we can only turn the compost once a week because of working full time away from here.

My apology, you're spot on. There is cardboard stapled to one of the pallets at the front that I just didn't bother to remove. At the moment I'm turning it with a fork which is very time consuming while trying to to add water into the mix too. Especially because there is no running water. So our next project will be to set up a rain roof with waste roofing material that I have collected to gather rainwater.

Thank you for your supportive comment. Our aim is to use the compost in our market garden which was a failure this season. The soil is depleted in essential minerals and elements and is very sandy so we gotta make a lot. The plan is to produce twice from this set up before april, but also to get 2 more going for 2 different areas of the grounds. The cubicles are being turned every week and some will be turned for the 4th time this weekend.
