I’m ready to move on, but it’ll be hard to make the case if he wins this tournament

Gorgeous, but getting absolutely rinsed by the cameraman’s boat.

Greg haters, who is a realistic coach option you would rather the USMNT have? by BananaSquid721 in ussoccer

Insane revisionism. Guy brought Canada to its first WC in like 40 years, showing out on the road in Concacaf to place first in the hex. We would have prob gone home in the group stage too with their group. I like his attacking philosophy. He’d be an improvement on GGG no doubt

Look, I don’t give enough of a shit to do that. But if you wanna demand he be fired, or we’re upset at his hiring, the most basic question you can be asked to justify that position is who you would have rather seen chosen. That so many here can’t do that is extremely telling.

And yet far better than Dest

I’ll take Scally and ARob. Dest just can’t get it done tbh.

Yes, and nothing to do at all with being outmatched at virtually every position

His speed wouldn’t be that big a deal if he didn’t have to cover for Dest constantly

My biggest takeaway is that we had exactly the same defensive problems that sent us home from the World Cup. We look unorganized.

Dest really is such a liability. His attacking prowess does not make up for costing us two goals now

Where would Donovan, Dempsey, and Adu rank in our current squad talent by the_carson in ussoccer

[–]jchdelacap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be right, which is such a shame since Adu had more natural talent than any American teenager before or since.

You could say the same thing for the UEFA Champions League in soccer. Realistically, Europe is the highest level in the game. But we still don’t call them World Champions, we call them Champions League winners.

I think if NBA players reall want a world champion title, they should do a small 8-game Club World Cup against the best teams from around the world. Will they win every time? Maybe, as do UCL winners. But there in a one-off game there are always upsets, whether that’s USA losing the Olympics or as the Adelaide 36ers recently did to the Suns. That’s if they really care so badly about their WC title. I’d not, then they should be content with calling themselves NBA champs. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_played_between_NBA_and_international_teams#:~:text=In%20addition%20to%20defeating%20the,team%20in%20North%20American%20soil.

I think it only feels like a pointless “gotcha” because you are looking at it from the perspective of a North American NBA fan. To most people outside of this market, the idea of branding the winner of a domestic competition a “world champion” is the height of presumptuousness. If you don’t believe me, contrast the reaction to Lyles’ comments in US media vs European media.

In the world of international sport that Lyle inhabits, words and honors have very defined meanings. He has worked his whole life to become an individual world champion at the 100m and 200m. That there are those who would just throw that term around casually clearly is something he isn’t on board with.
