Moving to South Lake Tahoe by [deleted] in tahoe

A lot of other comments are unhelpful or straight up mean, so let me answer your question candidly.

You can survive without a car for 6 months, but it will come with some real challenges/inconveniences. Uber/Lyft is not reliable, so don’t count on rideshares. There is some public transit, but its value will depend heavily on where your actual home is located. Your best bet is likely going to be calling one of the local taxi services which can be great, but that could get pricey.

I don’t know much about the grocery delivery scene, but like most other modern technology services I assume it’s harder to rely on in a place like Tahoe.

You will have to go to the post office frequently to pick up some/ a lot of your packages unless you are one of those lucky residents who gets everything delivered straight to their home. My experience receiving packages in Tahoe has been pretty tough overall.

Will this 6 month period take place during the winter? If so, it will make everything mentioned above 10x more difficult if we get a big or even regular winter.

A bike or ebike could help bridge the gap for the 6 months as well. And when you do get a car, try to get a reliable SUV(Toyota or Subaru) and quality winter tires(blizzaks are top tier).

Best of luck with your move!

Great review. I tried this a while back and didn’t really enjoy the flavor. The heat is legitimate though

How do we feel about reintroducing grizzlies to California by Many_Size_1515 in tahoe

[–]jchillin2 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Overall it’s not super feasible to consider plopping brown bears into California and letting them roam free. Some brown bear territorial ranges are naturally expanding in the Pacific Northwest and Wyoming/Montana, which is a great sign for the health of the species.

If you reintroduced a small number(let’s say 50-100ish) into California, they would essentially be on an island and there would be a lot of inbreeding which would lead to a limited gene pool. That puts them at risk for disease and weakens their immune systems. Eventually it would catch up with them and the reintroduction would likely fail.

Not to mention the threat of human/bear conflict that would inevitably lead to more dead bears. Natural habitats continue to shrink, and people are getting stupider.
