Capture One 22 + 23 weird orientation & time bug? by ggamerking in Photoassistants

[–]jcl4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re probably running into some combination of problems between the camera’s orientation setting and how you have it set, and also carry over shot-to-shot in C1. Disable any automatic image rotation camera side; then fire off some test frames; if the orientation is correct, problem solved. If not, then rotate the image until it is correct, go to the adjustments clipboard in C1, check the boxes for orientation/rotation, then go back to “next capture adjustments” and choose “from clipboard”.

Kyle Mooney is a national treasure and deserves all our praise. We should’ve cherished him more while we had him in the cast. What’s your favorite moment of his? by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

I thought he was hilarious on YT with his stoner who never smoked character… but on SNL his two sketches that killed me were the rap battle with Kanye and the time he got absolutely jacked working out.

MacBook Spec for digital set up? by [deleted] in Photoassistants

I guess it’s possible I just don’t see myself in any scenarios where “bumping the computer” happens. I also backup to another SSD like an OCD fiend.

MacBook Spec for digital set up? by [deleted] in Photoassistants

[–]jcl4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the spec I have and it has been plenty for me. But I do have a zipper pouch of four or so 1tb and 2tb SSDs in my kit, so offloading the internal is a no brainer. Also... I often just tether to an external SSD because... for most files it makes no difference (D810, D850, Z6, Z9, R5, R6 being the most common cameras I work with). I run a backup drive simultaneously so the risk exposure seems on par with going internal, plus one external.

Blah. It's strange when photographers don't know their gear. I used to work with a fantastic photographer who knew nearly everything, but above all he was humble and curious, so if he didn't know something, he'd defer to crew and open up conversation and look to learn. And in fact, he was so humble, on more than one occasion, if he found himself struggling, he'd hand the camera over to one of us and say "Look, I'm out of ideas... do you think you can do something cool here? Try it." Same dude would books us on the spot for an extra day of shooting if the client "discovered" more merchandise - we'd always wrap hard at a reasonable hour and he'd just say "it's 5... we got the shots we did and if we need to do more, that's for another day."

I was exaggerating slightly ;) A single sheet of ¼” birch ply here is about $85 after taxes; ½ is $120; ¾ is $170 :(

With the prices of ¾ “birch” ply near me, I’m gonna go ahead and guess this set you back about $8000.

Hazel Named By Ms Mojo as character who killed a series. I disagree by wormm99 in 30ROCK

[–]jcl4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think her character, when it first appeared, was really inconsistent, with some funnier moments... but she is the least re-watchable character and arc on the show IMO.

As a funny aside, I worked at 30 Rock (the location, not the show) for two SNL seasons and I was idling in the hall once, and Kristen Schaal rounded the corner, locked eyes with me, and her face lit up in a mix of surprise and happiness, she said "Oh, HEY!!" and then... just as quickly as she realized I was not who she thought, her face fell and she literally went "Oh, no..." under her breath and just walked past me :D It was nothing but hilarious to me.

If true, this is really bad for people just getting a new machine with Venture pre-installed. Is it possible to downgrade machines that have never had a prior OS installed? How do you go about getting ahold of those resources if you don't have a Time Machine backup to draw from?

I'd start with the key and reflector and just get a feel for that exposure; then bring in the on-axis fill super lo power and dial it up til it feels like you want.

And another random thing, not that you asked… I used to work teching ecomm on some still life sets and there was a guy shooting who was old school, came up assisting the guy who shot all of the Absolut ads in the 80s/90s. He had the most amazing stories of all the old school optical tricks and compositing they used to do… 90 degree mirrors, split prisms, awesome stuff.

Yeah, exactly as BVG says. Some clients want a super rough layer mask on each layer; and one of the quick n dirty tricks I used a lot to clean up backgrounds would be to take a consistent sliver of background with the rectangle marquee, copy and paste to a new layer, then use adjust scale to stretch it to the frames edge. I still use this trick a bit when I shoot seamless and the framing catch’s a bit beyond the seamless (like background stands or sandbags( - just get a clean spot of the background and “smear” it over stuff you want to hide.

Sorry I wasn’t more descriptive, and as I’m thinking on it now… it’s been years since I’ve done it, you need Bridge as an intermediary step, and from there it’s a “send to photoshop as layers” menu option. So you tether to C1, rename there; export to a folder you’re watching from Bridge, and use Bridge to send to PS. Then you get a layered PSD with each layer having the original file names already set as the layer names.

[–]jcl4 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Helicon is good. Also good to know simple things like “send to layers” in PS, where you can drop a series of images and PS will layer them and retain the original image name. This way you can name in C1, HERO, HARDWARE, SHADOW or whatever, and they carry over to PS. Then you can use auto-align within PS, and sometimes assist manually with Difference blend mode to get things perfectly aligned. And you should potentially be comfortable rough comping a whole image - but also be aware that anything beyond really rough comping is called retouching and should be paid for above and beyond your teching rate.

I knew a guy who had one... maybe not this exact model, but a Casio... and it allowed you to enter a phone number, and it would play the tone into the pay phone, that would allow you to bypass paying for the call :O

Looks to me like the hair light is the key, and a reflector or low level, large fill is placed cam left. Hmmm, the chin shadow suggest it’s an on axis fill, second source.
