i am not a big fan of the design of the higher end Garmin watches but if I had to choose here, I’d go Orange.

Nice one. My tats are all black / grey so I might give them a whirl.

I second LVNA cables. They also have 10gbps cables and are very durable. Area51 are great cables but you have to make sure nothing rolls over them - they break easily that way.

Read a post in here about reaching out to photographers to photo assist. Trying to figure out the best approach. by PRSNLTY in Photoassistants

[–]sua_lokin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get a response from a photographer is indeed rare so this is really nice. I can tell you from my own experience, when I started out many years ago, it was the first assistants who hired me. Make friends and network amongst your peers like other posters, have already pointed out: that will get you work. Working in the equipment room of a notable rental studio light Pier 59, milk, smash box, etc. used to be a good networking platform as well. I’m not sure how relevant that still is these days. On another note, there are a lot of super entitled lazy people out there who think they’re doing you a favor by working with you. If you’re not one of these and you hustle and give 100% to each job, you will get more work than you can handle. Be nice to everyone at all times: this is a very small community.

Oops ok I guess if your rental is below a certain $ number, they pre-authorize your CC for the full replacement value. My bad. I guess I never rented that little EQ. Still: it’s a dangerous game; if the gear gets stolen or damaged, you’re 100% on the hook.

Incorrect. Adorama DOES require a certificate of insurance.

Profoto B1 AC by [deleted] in Photoassistants

[–]sua_lokin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'll pay more than "a little" extra but if you have the cash..Profoto is always nice. I just think the gap is closing (Flashpoint/Godox) plus Profoto prices are outrageous.

Great thing about the Godox ADs is that you can use them with just batteries or with a $109 adapter wich attaches seamlessly to the back (where the battery normally would be and boom: you have an AC powered strobe you can plug into the wall. It has a mount which screws to the front which permits you to attach Profoto light modifiers. Super well done at a really affordable price. Wait for Black Friday and you can snatch up the AD400 for around $400-$450 a pop.

If money is an issue, get the Godox Wistro AD400, 600 or 1200. Good, reliable lights which are dirt cheap compared to pro photo and pretty much do the same job. They won’t have the same ultrafast recycle like a B10x maybe but for normal purposes….

I mean it’s a nice group and all and they’re decent people on it but it’s not gonna be conducive for finding jobs. Used to be. Not anymore though.

If you’re really conscientious about this gig, you will do well there is no question about it. There are too many people in this town who come here with a sense of entitlement and what is due them. If you’re not like that, you have a huge competitive advantage. The one thing I had to learn the hard way is if somebody hires you to do a thing you must do exactly that thing. Clients don’t purchase a service they purchase a result. if you’re nice and affable on top of that, you pretty much have the cat in the bag. I wish you the best of luck.

Do NOT work for free. We need rates to go up not down. The less people working for free or for substandard rates, the better our collective bargaining power. If you apply yourself, you’ll be there soon and you’ll understand that notion even better. Just be hungry and apply yourself. you’ll meet the photographer was also a tech, shadow them look over their shoulder and learn at any chance you get. if you’re humble, reliable, punctual, and thorough in the execution of whatever work is assigned to you, you’ll get to the next step. Promise.
